I recently got my "forever" license after running through hoops. While waiting in line at AAA (they're processing RMV stuff for members only) - and only waiting a little over an hour - the guy ahead of me had taken his son to the RMV in Southbridge the Friday before (this was on a Monday) and waited 3.5hrs. The man ahead of him said the lines were 4hrs long in Worcester.
It takes 20min to process data thru national registry, plus eye test and pic, so approx. 30min per person! Found out, after the fact, Wednesday's are the best days to renew - for some reason, least busy day.
Good luck to your DH!
@eddyandme What is a "forever license"??
I always had to wait forever in MA for renewals/address change or whatever.
Not to mention putting up with attitude. LOL
@Cakers3, a forever license is the new id the country is switching/has switched to. You must have one by 2020 if you want access to federal bldgs (P.O. excluded) and domestic flights. It's the same cost but you need the special paperwork. If you got one before March 26th, you got a regular license, but if you want the forever license which will be required in two years I heard you still have to provide required paperwork and it'll cost you another $50! And, if your surname is different from your name on your birth certificate, you must provide a marriage/divorce certificate. Imho, it's worth paying $50 to join AAA, just to avoid the RMVs - they're NASTY!
@eddyandme Ok so you are referring to the Real ID Act of 2005. I'm not sure if having a license that never needs renewing is part of that? People lose their licenses or have them suspended or after a certain age most states require people to pass certain criteria to still be on the road.
A forever ID makes more sense but it doesn't matter to the discussion.
@Cakers3, I was told that that's the only license the state will be giving out as of 2020. And, you do have to renew it every five years which can be done online. But, they are calling it a 'forever' license - don't know why. And, do to the extra paperwork, computer updates, computer crashes, the RMV - always horrible - is even worse than ever. So, timeline is what this thread was about - excsssive waits - so it is applicable, imho.

@eddyandme I meant my post was not relevant, not yours. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

in our state we did not need any special paperwork to renew and to get our star license (aka REAL ID.) just renewed mine a month or so ago and it will be good for seven years. i have not heard it called a "forever license."

MA should take lessons from your state! Just on news, new 'kink' in the system. A man had to renew, presented a passport in lieu of birth cert. and got refused after waiting in line 4hrs (at AAA which is quicker than RMV). Supposedly the feds erred in their new passports so after all that time, the man got a 60day temp and must return and wait in line again after he receives his birth certificate (with a raised stamp) from NY! And real id makes sense - don't know why they call if forever - confusing, but everything run by the state of MA is confusing, at best!
