I have followed a bit of the Oregon trail from Baker City to Oregon City.  Still ruts to be seem out there.

There is a steep grade, both ways, between La Grande and Pendleton.  Even in a car it makes you ponder.

@Still Raining   Aren't those ruts something.  I have seen ruts, and swails still 5 ft deep. Can you imagine back then some of the last pioneers had to go through them, and they were 6-7 ft deep. Obscuring light in the wagon for miles.  I believe a full wagon averages 8-16 miles a day. The steep grade, must have been terrifying!   Those poor oxen often just were injured or killed.

There are accounts babies being born on the trial.  That absolutely floors me.

My mother's family was here in Oregon prior to statehood and the land I live has a grant, not a deed.

One if my SILs said that they sure didn't come just for the ride.  Just looking for land and a living.

@Desertdi.  I heard it was snowing in the mountains.  We had 70 mph winds yesterday, the today was nice until about 2 hrs ago when it came up again and got cold.  Whats this about, I wonder?  Maybe the Flafstaff cold front perhaps.  Freeze expected tomorrow night.

OMGosh......Well, at least they were moving slow, and not rushing.

I often think about the people and load- bearing horses/cattle during that time frame.

Not an easy life, for sure.

@Kachina624

I just NOW looked at the radar map...

That storm is still hanging over Flag, and it "COULD" be headed toward you.    (We might get a little rain out of it down here.)     Whatta Spring!     di

My last move was only a half mile away, and I hated it. I'd have been the pioneer woman who they threw over a cliff for complaining all the time.

Look at some of the ruts left today. There has been erosion, so they were once deeper. Can you imagine the traffic, day after day it woukd take to erode those boulders?  Made it so hard to manuver the wagon
