I can't believe the forums are closing after many many years of posting and kindred friendships that will be gone.  Now I am thinking of signing up on Facebook.  Any recommendations on how to do this safely and effectively?  Any good books to navigate a beginner through this process?

@BornToShop  Protect your security by only allowing access to your page to friends and family, not public.  Limit the info you put on your profile

if you're signing up in order to continue interacting through the QVC page, you can sign up using your forum ID rather than your real name.

I don't think you can do that.  People do get creative with their names, but last I heard, if someone at Facebook determines you are using a fake name they will ask for proof of ID and that is the name you must use.

Re: How To Sign Up On Facebook

This is what Facebook itself says about names:

What names are allowed on Facebook?

Facebook is a community where everyone uses the name they go by in everyday life. This makes it so that you always know who you're connecting with.
Your name can't include:
  • Symbols, numbers, unusual capitalization, repeating characters or punctuation.
  • Characters from multiple languages.
  • Titles of any kind (example: professional, religious).
  • Words or phrases in place of a name.
  • Offensive or suggestive words of any kind.
If your name follows our standards and you're still having trouble changing it, find out why.
Other things to keep in mind:
  • The name on your account should be the name that your friends call you in everyday life. This name should also appear on an ID or document from our ID list. There may be instances for using a name other than what appears on an ID document from our ID list for some profiles.
  • Nicknames can be used as a first or middle name if they're a variation of your authentic name (like Bob instead of Robert).
  • You can also list another name on your account (example: maiden name, nickname, professional name).
  • Profiles are for individual use only. You can create a Page for a business, organization or idea.
  • Impersonating anything or anyone isn't allowed. Learn more in our Community Standards.

Believe me, it can be done.  A person can have more than one ID.  I know several people who do,  It's just up to the person to remember which sign on to use. That said, my DH had a second ID and Facebook didn't like his posts so they canned that one. . 😆😆

Re: How To Sign Up On Facebook

Be as anonymous as possible - I have a facebook account, I don't have a photo - I am a blank profile - and I have went into the account settings and set everything I can to only me.  I did not fill out where I live, went to school, marital status etc.  I am as close to being invisible as possible.  I also admit only my family as my friends, never accept any friend request.  Please be aware, if you go on the QVC forums and post, there are "men"? who try to befriend you.  Never reply to them.

@JeanLouiseFinch I didn't say it couldn't be done.  That's what I meant about creative names.  But, if someone at FB gets suspicious, they'll shut it down.  Same for more than one ID.  Not allowed, but peope do it.  I had a friend who used his pets so he could get "help" on the games he played.

@BornToShop

I wouldn't give FB my time or energy.

So the Q thinks they will force their loyal followers over to FB not a chance.

But if you must

Don't use your real name if you sign up, use a fake name.  Dont put any real information about yourself on there.

Today I got 27 new notifications from people "I know".  I Don'r use my real name so how do I know these people? ...and one guy is in the picture is pointing a gun at me.....really.
