We had to replace our refrigerator this year. The former one was 45 years old. It finally wore out and started leaking water, so had to go.
The same with our gas range. That was 47 years old, but stopped working properly and also had to be replaced. We would still have both appliances if they hadn't broken down. There is no need to replace an appliance if it still works.

Our current refrigerator is a KitchenAid we purchased in 2003 to replace the one that came with the house that finally died...( era 1980). I still miss that old 1980 green fridge.. It was big and had a lot more room.
I have NEVER liked the KitchenAid fridge... we bought out of desperation as our old one had died and we needed something NOW> so no thought was put into the purchase. I have hated it from day one. Hate the layout of the interior... just plain HATE IT.
I am thankful it has lasted so long... 18 years now... so I will keep it until this pandemic shortage of appliances is over... and then replace it with something I will love.

My Mom and Dad bought their fridge brand new when they married Dec. 23rd 1960. In 2012 it was still running in my Grandmother's garage where she kept all the extra drinks, food ect... We unplugged it that year and gave it away when she went into assisted living. I always wondered if it went on running somewhere else and for how long. It looked horrible but it worked very well and never needed service.

We replaced our original refrigerator (over 30 years old), working fine, when we redid our kitchen about 6 years ago.
That "new" refrigerator broke and after repairing it several times, we replaced it earlier this year.
During the pandemic my brother's, my sister's, her partner's, my mother's, my brother-in-law's and my sister-inlaw-s refrigerators have all broken down and been replaced!
That is everyone in our immediate family!
If it's still working, cherish your old refrigerator![]()

@Foxxee, my current one is 5 months old, it was part of my birthday present. The one that it replaced, a Montgomery Ward Signature series fridge, was 30 years old, it came with this house, it was still running. My current fridge is part of a kitchen suite that my son & his wife got me for "to make up for all the birthdays & Christmases we never got you anything."

Mine is just a few years old and I really love it, so I hope it lasts longer. It is the black stainless (well, the doors are that and the body is just the regular black). My fav - freezer on top. Lots of space. I really love that there are no handles that jut out from the doors. It's sleek!
The cool thing was that it measured the same depth as my former one but, with the former one I had, there were handles that came out so that was part of the measurement. The best part is that this one, while basically the same size, has more space inside.
I don't do ice makers, so I had that removed and just use more space.

It's model LTC24223D, made by LG.

I have a Hotpoint in my garage that is 44 years old. And still working like a charm.
My neighbor bought a GE 2 years ago. The condenser went before it was 6 months old.

That was very nice and generous of your son and his wife. Here's wishing your new fridge a long and happy life.
