@gardenman wrote:I just got as Keurig K450 for my Mom six weeks ago and I think it's a nice little device. In the manual they point out that the k-cups can be recycled by peeling off the foil, rinsing out the grounds, and then placing the clean plastic that remains in your plastic recycling bin. The reality though is the plastic in k-cups is very thin, lightweight, largely inconsequential. I dare say disposable razors take up far more landfill space than k-cups.
How many k-cups would it take to make one water bottle? I'm guessing somewhere between twenty and thirty. If you're going after landfill space wasters then target disposable razors, water bottles and more before you target k-cups. Complaining about their ability to be recycled is kind of a joke. They can be recycled if the user wishes to go to the trouble of peeling off the foil and rinsing them out.
I use none of those either.

I used to love Keurig coffee makers and bought several for gifts. Until the time I came home from a 10-day vacation, made a cup of coffee, and wondered what the dark stuff was on the inside of the clear water reservoir. It was MOLD! Sure, I could clean it from the reservoir, but you can't clean the internal water storage tank. I couldn't get the thought out of my mind that I was probably drinking moldy water. Yuck. I'm sure there wouldn't have been mold if I hadn't gone on vacay and used the maker every day. Threw the two I had away and bought a Mr. Coffee that is a single pass maker. The water you pour in is used for that cup, no reservoir.
I like the ease of use of the cups, but I only buy from San Francisco Bay Coffee Co so I can easily recycle the cups.

@ValuSkr wrote:Thanks to all for your concern about the environment. As with most matters involving trash and recycling, one person's waste is insignificant but everyone's waste put together is huge. So I appreciate when a person does his or her small part to help the environment and make a better future for our children and grandchildren. And, the problem with pods is that even if they are recyclable (and I don't know that they are), the vast majority of people don't bother.
Amen to this!! I always smh head when people poo poo others for worrying about being able to recycle even the smallest things Every.single.little.bit counts period.
Oh and in my area, the pods are NOT recycleble. Plastic containers that small are not allowed as their machines cannot sort the smaller things like that and apparently they can clog up the machine. I had asked if we collected them and brought them in by themselves would they be okay and they said no. So no, not every place allows them to be recycled.

I have one of the original ones that I bought so my mom could have a fresh cup of coffee every morning. I like it just fine and it runs great although my friends say it sounds like a 747 taking off when I run it (it IS one of the original models).
To be honest I am not a coffee connoisseur so when this goes, I'll probably switch over to instant or maybe be daring and buy a coffee press . . . ![]()

Not me. I still prefer a coffee maker. One steeply priced cup at a time might have some advantage, I guess I just haven't figured out what it is yet.
Oh, and I also don't own a Vitamix. I have plans to get one of those either.

We got a big keurig last Christmas and now it lives in a cabinet. Never found a brew I liked and even the fill cup was a hassle. Back to Mr. Coffee.

I have the personal one in the eggplant color I purchased from the Q a couple of years ago. It is okay, but I think a little too inconvenient as I drink a lot of coffee in the mornings. I went back to using a regular coffee maker. But I was thinking about purchasing the TSV today until I saw the latter part of the presentation last hour with Mary Beth. The vendor was going to demonstrate brewing a cup of coffee in the sea blue color machine and she remarked that a display popped up and the macine wasn't functioning. She said we will just go to another machine, we must have given the blue one, "too much love"! Lol, needless to say, this prevented me from buying because I would definitely give mine too much love and I am just afraid it would quit working. I definitely think that was a sign for me! 😌

So, I ask you "Keurig Green Mountain" please tell me what you are doing about this concern / major problem? How are you going to improve our landfill and our environment? What are you doing to improve our "Childrens lives our Grandchildrens lives"? How are you going to clean up our environment from
K-Cup waste?
So, did you actually ask Keurig/Green Mountain this question, or are you just asking us?
I called the company and talked with them about it because they actually have the ability to make changes in their product and the people on the forums don't. I hope you will also contact the company and tell them how you feel about the issue of K-Cup waste.
They do have a plan to phase out current K-cups and move to recyclable cups with less waste, but like you, I pointed out that other companies have already done this and I felt their target completion date was too far away considering it's possible now.
I also let them know I was mad that they had eliminated the option to use a My K-Cup refillable filter in the 2.0 versions and let them know I would not be purchasing any new Keurigs if they did not bring that back. They have now made a My K-Cup filter compatible with the 2.0 machine because many people gave them this feedback.
If you have problems, please talk to the company about them as well as the people here. Hopefully your post will encourage end users to change their own habits. but the problem will exist until the actual company makes a change. So let them know how you feel. They do seem to be receptive to ideas if they know their bottom line is being affected, which it was when they dropped the My K-Cup option from the 2.0.

I put my reservoir in the dishwasher once a week or so. I also rinse out the reservoir before refilling it. I clean my coffee put with vinegar. It should kill all the mold.

We have a regular Keurig and a travel Keurig.. When we got the regular one it started giving us fits and hubby was about to run over it with the truck.. but I gave it surgery, I took the water filter out and has worked perfectly since. Poor thing was struggling and gurgling to get the water pulled out to heat up.. speaking of which said Keurig is on this morning, along with the regular coffee maker.. Hubby drinks alot of coffee so it's very convenient..
