I think for some people it's the thrill of the deal, like gambling or successfully scoring something from an auction at a good price. It probably makes sense to work at couponing for some families who truly watch their spending. I've tried couponing (not exreme) many times & just got tired of fooling with all those little pieces of paper, keeping track of expiration dates, etc. I just use the e-coupons my store offers, & they also periodically send me store coupons based on my buying habits. Yes, I know, they track my purchases when I use my loyalty card, but I really don't care.

I was channel surfing over the weekend and caught a glimpse of one where they had something like 1000 tubes of toothpaste.
All that stuff goes funky.
Even an unopened box of cereal will eventually go stale, not to mention buggy boxes of pasta after a time.

Before I retired, I worked with a woman who used coupons when grocery shopping. She had several teenage children and could often take advantage of her coupons (often buying two items to be able to use coupon). She said she often paid under $25.00 to $30.00 for an overflowing cart of groceries. She didn't hoard items; she used what she bought before buying more. Her husband was deceased and this was part of her way to keep the family together at a lower cost to her. Other staff often brought coupons in for her; they knew she would use them often and wisely.

I saw one episode where the young woman said it satisfies her need to shop because otherwise she would buy things she wouldn't use.
She bought everything for a baby shower with coupons...the food that is. Even diabetic products.

I have never figured out how anyone can get the 1000 tubes of toothpaste, free, or all those candy bars free, etc. I barely coupon anymore. I look through Red Plum for a few, like the 1.00 ones for Swiffer if I find them. There just aren't many that we use.
