Hilton Hawaiian Village on Oahu.
Been there twice and it was great both times.

Depends if you want to be in the thick of things on Oahu, if you want Honolulu in town the Royal Hawaiian (pink hotel) is fantastic.
A little further out as mentioned is the Hilton Hawaiian Village.
Both hotels old classic standards.
As for Maui Lahaina is no more. Depends which part of the island, north end as in Ka'anapali or south Wailea.
Love Wailea, the Marriot (former Intercontinental) Wailea Beach Resort, there's the 4 seasons there and also Grand Wailea.

Both islands offer different experiences and where you stay depends on what you are interested in doing or seeing.
Oahu....do you want to stay in the city and be able to walk to the beach, restaurants and shopping which is offered in Waikiki or Honolulu or would you prefer a more relaxing area, such as the North Shore?
Maui the same. Kaanapali or Waimea? All inclusive resorts, apartments, hotels....walking, beaches or relaxing, but a car needed?
Both islands are wonderful and great choices...my favorite places. It's been a few years since I have been there, but I used to go about twice a year. IMO, The area you choose to stay is more important than the hotel. It is EXPENSIVE no matter where you stay.
You should choose an area you are interested in first.
There are often great deals on Hawaii travel on Travelocity. I have gotten some really well priced trips mentioned there.
I have traveled to Hawaii with some low price packages that included the flight, accommodations with breakfast and rented a condo a few times which was nice.
There are lots of choices at different price points and many locations to consider.

Check to make sure the area wasn't affected by the recent floods.

My recommendations - for Oahu - Sheraton Waikiki - great location right on the beach.
For Maui - Hyatt Regency Resort. One of the largest pools I've ever seen with grotto and swim up bar. Beautiful grounds, all inclusive.
We loved both hotels and would stay at them again.

We've been to Hawaii half a dozen times. We did not like the Hilton Hawaiian Village. Too big, kind of out of it. I would stay at the Sheraton or Royal Hawaiian.
Did not like Ka'anapali. Felt like Miami Beach!!! Love Wailea! We stayed at the Marriot when it was the Intercontinental and it still remains one of my favorite hotels anywhere.
PS Bring money! For a less expensive place on Oahu we stayed at the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani Waikiki Beach a block or so from the beach.
Aloha!

I am thrilled for you, only becuase it is an awesome trip! We have been to both Maui and the Big Island. We prefer to rent a private home with a kitchen for many reasons versus a Holtel. One, it's convient, so that we could cook some meals at home, as eating out gets expensive there. Second, it's quiet, and we don't have to deal with drunks or loud teens and kids. Third, they come with so many ammeneties and end up being the same price as a Hotel. That being said, to each their own.
The last trip we took we rented a home that had a banana tree, macadamia nut trees, and mangos, all of which we were welcome to. Plus on our arrival, the owner left us a big basket of various fruits and Kona coffee beans. Whatever you decide, I hope you have an amazing time!
