Our family is small but on occasion when we've had more, it hasn't been an issue.  My round table seats 8 and like you said, 10 if you squish.  There is a bar that separates the dining room and kitchen.  Four can sit there if needed and if we need even more room (that's never happened) I wouldn't hesitate to bring in a card table.  At my mom's, the card table was for the children.  I don't think anyone would mind if it meant all the family got to eat together.  Tell her to be thankful she has that *problem* (lots of family).

It depends on the number of guests but regardless of who hosts, there are always multiple tables.  My daughter will have three tables tomorrow.  Her dining room table and two card tables.  My condo is smaller, the last time we did Thanksgiving.  I had 8 at the dining room table.  I borrowed a folding table and 6 folding chairs from my friend and that was set up in my living room.  The three little kids my great niece's kiddie play table.  Even when I was a little kid my grandparents needed more than one table for everyone.  Appetizers for Christmas dinner would be a huge NO for me, either as a guest or as the host.
