Re: Holiday gifts first world problems

@San Antonio Gal I spoke with my brother last night.  He asked if we had gotten a chance to set up the turntable.

I told him how excited I was when I opened the gift!  I saw how excited he was and I was excited too!  There was a lot of chaos at the time with a dozen people opening gifts....it was fun and a bit crazy!

I told him that even though I was very happy,  grateful and appreciative for the thoughtful gift I realized that after going through measurements in several places in our home there was no practical place for it.  I offered to have him come over to help set it up.

He also mentioned that he had forgotten that we don't use WiFi or Bluetooth in our home since DH is stubborn about it concerning his health. (another whole topic)

He said that it wasn't a problem for him to take it back and return it.  We agreed that it was the best thing and instead he is giving me a restaurant gift card....I will take him out to eat.

At this point in my life I don't want or need gifts but prefer experiences with family & friends.

@haddon9  It seemed like you wanted to return the gift from the start regardless of people's suggestions and ideas so you did what you wanted and I'm glad it worked out for you.

@haddon9  Firstly, if my brother had even thought to get me a turntable after mearly having a conversation about Lp's I'd be shocked and amazed!  He actually Listened!

2nd, I think I'd fess up to whatever you decide BECAUSE  I know my brother, having gifted me the turntable, would be ADDING albums to my collection at every birthday or holiday from now on.

@Biftu I do like to hear everyone's opinions. I got an interesting mix here.

I asked both of my kids as well.  My son felt that I should just keep it but didn't offer any solutions as to where to put it.....it was my problem.

My daughter felt that he would be fine and understanding.  She felt that a gift shouldn't become a burden and I agreed. It turns out she was right.  He offered to return it when I asked if he would like to come over to help set it up.

I personally never want anyone to feel that they must keep a gift that I give them.  I would hate to do that to someone if they couldn't use it or want it.

@San Antonio Gal Thanks so much!  I am glad that is over and I really was stressed about it.
