Hip replacements -- what made you finally decide to go ahead with it?

I have been told I am a candidate for a hip replacement. Getting to where I am having trouble getting up and down from a chair....shooting pains in my legs down to knees....at what point have you decided enough is enough and you take the plunge??

Re: Hip replacements -- what made you finally decide to go ahead with it?

I have not had any replacements but have had to choose when to have a lot of body parts repaired. For me it would not be a matter of waiting if it was interfering with my being able to function at my best physically by having something done.

As long as my doctor agrees with me I move forward with whatever is needed to move me forward and there would be not reason I would choose to be in pain and limit my activities because of unnecessaryily waiting for some arbitrary reason to do so.

Realizing things are not quite as cut and dried with everyone when it comes to body repair/maintenance or replacements, should the time come when I feel something that is available to me to give me a more pleasant and active life in lieu of waiting until???

No waiting for me. I feel I need it and my doctor agrees, we set up the date for having it done.

Had one hip done couple years ago after enduring much joint pain and trouble walking or standing. Never regretted doing it. Rehab not bad and just been so much better. Follow doctor instructions, do rehab and get on the road to better movements. Good luck to you

I haven't had hip replacements, but I've had both knees replaced. The simple fact is, you reach a point where you're in more pain than you want to tolerate, and you find you are unable to do many things you want to do -- and realize the situation is getting worse, not better, with no prospect of improvement without surgery. That's when you take the plunge.

Mother had a hip replacement in her early 80's and she breezed through it. I had to buy her a bunch of mumus because she couldn't pull her pants on for awhile. Hip replacements apparently are nearly as traumatic as knee replacement or as hard from which to recuperate.

My cousin just did it..she couldn't tolerate the pain any longer and while she was afraid the whole time waiting..it was nothing she thought...overnight in the hospital..she wasn't even put to sleep..and the incision was really little..she is back on her feet and returning to her job on 6/11...surgery was 4/21!

thanks all! My hesitation is my son's wedding in August...of course, I was fine, occasional discomfort...but the past month it decides to kick in -- making it difficult to do much...now i just don't know if it will be too close to wedding. I don't want to be at the wedding with a cane but also don't want to be in so much pain I can't enjoy the wedding. Thanks all for your replies.

Of course, it's up to you -- but if you can have the surgery done soon, it's reasonable to anticipate that you'd be getting around well by August. If not, I'd much rather use a cane than be in pain and miserable! Joint replacements and other orthopedic surgeries are so commonplace nowadays that no one would think twice about seeing you still in recuperation.
