Have you been to Ruidoso, N.M. ? thinking about going there in May.

If I didn't have to work, I'd consider moving there. Rent a cabin and mix and mingle with the locals. We met some of the nicest people there -- a lot of them, Texans.

There's my old buddy! Thought about you lots of times. You remember I'm in Tx, and Kachinea is in Alburq, Since I'm new down here always looking for places to go that's not that far away from Amarillo.
Maybe she will come in later. Hubbo's boss owns a cabin down there and we're gonna see if we can get it (FREE) LOL like in May. I was on a website and they talked about motorcycle week. Nope, not going that week LOL

We spent a week in Ruidoso a few years ago. We were there on the 4th of July and had a great time. The Apache Indian tribe had a great parade, followed by a lunch of traditional foods at the reservation. All were invited and we felt very welcome.
There are several museums. A museum about horses was very interesting. There is also a racetrack. The downtown is charming with lots of lovely shops.

I'm thinkin' Kachina might be in Rio Rancho. Memory fails. Yes -- get a cabin. If you can't get the boss', check out Whispering Pines. The cabins are furnished with everything you need and you can have coffee on the balcony and watch the deer nibble on the shrubs below.
I also want to check out more of Catron County. It's on the west side of the state, right next to Arizona. It's our state's largest county and one of the least populated -- about 3500 people. It's like a mini-Wyoming.

I live in Texas, but only about 2 hours away from Ruidoso! Have spent much time in Ruidoso...one of my favorite towns. Love that place....any time of the year! Fall is especially lovely with the trees' color changing! Have been there during the motorcycle retreat...not the best time to be in that town. Too many and too noisy!
If you do go, be sure to go neighboring town, called
Cloudcroft and eat atThe Lodge! Great food, great atmosphere and even stay there overnight. All the rooms are decorated in "antiques". Ask about Rebecca !!!

No, I'm staying away from that rally business. I couldn't rest in my cabin knowing or not knowing what could be next door. We're coming in on a weekday early in May and being long gone by the time that ilk arrives.
May still be cool, but, we'll take coats. LOL
I was checking another N.M. place and they were due to hit there too. Red River, I think, and that scared me off. We go before schools let out and most people aren't on vacation yet. Avoid most of the crush.

This is a fun website:

You can pick a state, then check out the counties and cities in it.
Cloudcroft has the best climate in the state. The place to go in the summer.

@SharkE I'm here. I like Ruidoso but it's like an annex of Texas; more Texas license plates than New Mexico. I guess it's the closest God's Country to Texas. Midland and Odessa used to have to alternate their school spring break schedules because people inundated the small town. It's also the closest ski area to Texas... Ski Apache. The mountain is Sierra Blanca.
There are some nice places to stay, Inn of the Mountain Gods being the best. It also has a casino and is owned by the Mescalero Apaches. Nice shops but not the best I've ever seen. I judge by the quality and quanity of nice hand made items.
I don't know anything about about Red River except it has a new, very long zip line. There's something for you and DH to do! My next goal will be to get you two up to Southwest Colorado. The Chama, NM area is also nice. You can ride the Cumbres & Toltec narrow gauge railroad, more tame than zip line.
You'd love the Durango, CO area. Wonderful shops & galleries (jewelry etc), beautiful scenery especially when the Aspen are yellow and you can ride the narrow gauge Durango & Silverton railroad to the mountain town of Silverton which is spectacular. Silverton is an old mining town, very historic and also has shops. It's in a "bowl" surrounded by high peaks. You can drive there but it's a bit of a scary trip if you're not accustomed to mountain driving. I've driven it many times and survived. It's a good, paved road. Here's Silverton.
