Re: Helping the Homeless

[ Edited ]

I’m so proud to say my sports radio station, The Ticket 1310 (my avatar),

does annual programming to benefit Austin Street Center,

a homeless center here in Dallas.

For the last 17 yrs., one host, Norm Hitzges, broadcasts non-stop

for 18 hours,...from 6AM-Midnight....the day after Christmas.

He & the Station has raised over $500,000 for Austin Street Center.

Lots of pro athletes, coaches, bands, people with unusual stories...

they all show up either in person or call in. He has a heart of gold...

over 1/2 Million $$$ raised w/ his marathon broadcasting!! Wow.

Reason #964739 why I adore đź’› this radio station!

What is wrong with people.  If you are homeless, your clothes aren't neat, your hair, or you.  No one will hire you.  Open your hearts, and get your churches to open their doors, open those kitchens that make hot dogs for rumage sales and feed people, shelter homeless.  It is 25 here in Cocoa Beach Florida and I fear for anyone on the streets.  It is bitter with the wind.

With these bitter temperatures, older people or small childern may have serious issues.

I just realized today we had an 85 year old woman with no heat right down the street.  Called neighbors and she now has 4 oiled filled heaters in her home.  Her livingroom, bedroom and bathroom are a cozy 75.

Since the beginning of time there have been haves and have nots. And it is frequently not the person's fault. Is it someone's fault that they are not intelligent? Not everyone is born smart. Some other unfortunates have mental illness - I'm absolutely certain that people who are mentally ill would get better and be well if they possibly could. They don't want to be this way. PTSD - addiction, alcoholism , abuse etc etc etc.

When I hear anyone say krap like "they want to live like this" or "they choose to live on the streets" I just see red. You know every one of us is just one major disaster from being them - I never forget that.

I don't know if this was directed at my comment but I don't believe these people want to live like this. In some ways it's just that they are severally mentally ill and they can't be forced to get help. They are past the point of reasoned thinking.

What  are you talking about.  I mean homeless with no place to go or other avenues.

Watch The Dinner. Not the greatest movie I've ever see, but interesting commentary on this and the other issues subsurface in this thread.

I am military, 20 years, and when when someone knocks PTSD, I don't like it. I never knew. Yes, I am a woman and I am strong.  I am not weak, I am tough, I have had to be but I have fears and challenges.  I have my service dog who keeps me safe, 10 lb long-haired dachshund. Amazing something so small piques my courage.
