Help with the volume on my computer

I pushed the sound button on my monitor and I lost most of my sound I have never used any of these buttons before. My H. is hard of hearing and when our DGS contacts us via skype from overseas DH will not be able to hear him. I have the sound all the way up on the sound button in the task bar but it is not loud at all like it was before I pushed the button on the monitor at the bottom help!!!!
