Help re: closing a Facebook acct

I have had 2 people close to me who recently had their accounts stolen ( the one had all of her friends contacted by the scam artist begging for money)

I am over Facebook and I do not need the aggravation.

? when I close the account does an message go out to all my Friends alerting them to the closure?

Does the account close immediately?

Is there anything else I should be mindful of?
