Help, please--Can't use two computers at once in my house!

Can someone please help me or give me some suggestions? I have a desktop computer, but we also have a router for wireless service, too. The other day my son got a laptop, and ever since then he and I have both had trouble getting on the internet!

I don't understand it! If we are both trying to use our computers at the same time and both trying to get on the internet at the same time neither one of us can! My son actually has to shut his computer down just so I can get on the internet.

Does anybody have any idea what would cause this? Is there anything we can do? There are many times we would both like to be on the internet at the same time, and we have no idea what to do! Thanks!
