Hurley went in for a CBC yesterday...he has been on Phenobarbital for 3 of his 4 1/2 years. All of his blood work was great except for alk phos levels which were very high at 848. The Vet says he is not concerned at all, all other levels were excellent and this is normal in a dog on pheno. It still frightens me!!! We tried weaning him off of the pheno once and were not successful...I have tried multiple things for liver support, they all cause his IBD to flare up. So far we have tried milk thistle, Sam-e, dandelion and sylmarin - also a combo supplement from our herbalist, nothing has agreed with him.
Any one have any ideas? He is not even 5 years old, if they are this high already...it is scary. He is on a very low dose of pheno for a dog his size, it seems to work controlling his seizures, but sure is playing havoc with his liver.
TIA
