@Jersey Born wrote:@CLHS68 Is correct.
We know that if we take 100% of the price and subtract 75% from it, we will be left with 25% of the the full price.
$49 = 25% of the full price.
So, $49 = 1/4 of the full price, because 25%, or 25/100 can be reduced to 1/4.
You then set up an equation. 49 = 1 X is the number we want to determine.
X 4
Then, you cross multiply and get 1X = 49 times 4, or X = 196
So, the full price is $196.00.
Lots of inventive ways to get to the price but I would think if this is for a math class the teacher would be looking for this equation. It's been a minute (okay, lots of minutes!) but I remember getting the correct answer only gave partial credit. We had to show the equation.

In other words, $49 is a quarter of the original price...

I love math.
If $49 represents the price after a 75% discount, then $49 is 25% of the original price.
Therefore, the problem becomes: $49 is 25% of what number Remember that "is" signals division (÷), so 49 ÷ .25 = 196.
That's easily checked by simply multiplying 49 (one-quarter of the whole) by 4 . In this easy case, it can be solved by doing that, too.
But formulas are good.

X is the original price.
$49 is the sale price.
The sale price represents 75% off the original price.
X - 75% of X = $49.
So 25% of X = $49.
You divide $49 by 0.25, and you get $196.

To be fair, I think the couple of people who had the much lower answer might have mis-read the sentence as $49 being 75% OF the original price, instead of $49 being 75% OFF the original price. It would be an easy mistake to make. ![]()

This is algebra, but it's easier to just do it in your head this way.
$49 is 25% of the original price, 100%. 25 into 100 = 4. I took $49 times 4 to get 100%, the retail price, or $196.

49 x4 = 196. $196 is the original price.
$49+$49+$49=$147 plus $49= $196
25%x3.
Or 75% 25%
$147. +. $49. =$196

The equation would be: .75x= $49
X= $49/ .75
X= $65.33. Regular price.
To Check your answer: 65.33
X .75
------
$49.00.
It's Algebra!

@chickenbutt wrote:Yup - $196 is right.
If you take that times .25 it comes out to the $49.
The problem states $49 is 75% off the regular price. Not %25%

Yes it is 75% off. So $49 is 25% of the regular price. $196
