Help! Kitchen cabinet problem

We are remodeling our kitchen at our cottage. My husband just informed me that the space between the tops of the cabinets and the ceiling is only going to be 6inches. I wanted to decorate up there and when ordering and talking to the cabinet people he insists he told me this but of course I don't remember it at all.

What is the space size normally? the cabinets are ordered and its too late to change them. how wierd are they going to look? Like we forgot to put them up all the way? We could lower them and make the space between the counter and the cabinet smaller but that would look crazy too, wouldn't it?? I am freaking out right now!!! HELP!!
