Help! Getting Rid of Chemical Smells

I just received several pairs of canvas shoes from Easy Spirit that are really comfortable. However, they have that strong chemical smell that is showing up pretty often these days from foreign manufacturers.

I have baked them in the sun for 3 days, then washed them with Tide and bleach and they still have that very distinctive plastic/chemical odor. (Kind of like those bags for clothing from the Q). I've been online and seen several suggestions--surely someone here has found the secret! Thanks.
