She can always have a friend or relative fill out and email her applications for her. Lots of jobs don't require computer knowledge, unless she is looking for office type(s) of work.

Quick short update - oldest son took computer to mom over the weekend - she says she spent several hours filling out applications on line - also went to Dollar Tree in her neighborhood who had a sign in the window indicating they were hiring for holiday help...she sounded somewhat upbeat, so maybe she just needed some encouragement/direction????
anyway, at least there seems to be some effort being made which is a good thing.

O/P: Excellent news! ............There have been "Now hiring-seasonal help" banners just about everywhere here, almost every large (national) dept. store in our mall area. Restaurants, too. Working seasonal is a step in the right direction. And, if employers, co-workers, and customers like an employee, sometimes it continues into 'on call', and/or permanent part-time. Lots of flexibility in the workplace now-a-days. One of my favorite Holidays jobs (a thousand years ago, possibly in high school?) was gift wrapping at a major dept. store. I met so many very nice, appreciative people (many men, buying for their wives, GF's, Moms, etc.). A very rewarding short-term job, as I recall. And the time 'flew by'. There were several (of us) gift-wrappers. ............p.s. Seasonal work is a good start, as we know that it's only for a short amount of time, just in case we aren't happy (for whatever reason) there. And, it also gives people incentive to find other part-time/temporary work elsewhere. And hopefully good references, too. Good luck to her!

After years of working with families like this, I can think of only a tiny percentage who break the cycle. However tragic the situation is with the grandson, I doubt anything will happen if you do continue to help or if you don't.
The mother is 62 and is getting SS (because she worked in the past.)
The son is also working...getting a low wage, but working.
He isn't sitting on his duff, even though he has steel rods in his leg. He also stepped up and took in his son when the mom abandoned her child.
That's not all bad!

Most large companies only accept applications now online.
They use a computer program to search through all the applications.

Excellent update.
I have the feeling she is depressed and felt out of hope.

We were just asked for rent $$$ - said no - oldest son was also asked and said no - we are done...
To add to the drama, youngest son (part time "worker) is apparently "not getting much work" and his girlfriend (who just got out of prison) is now living with them part of the time...
I can't make this stuff up, folks....

ckr: I'm one of the folks who believes you and others whose situations seem a bit 'far-fetched'. I've heard/seen similar situations. Just wishing you and all concerned good luck.
