Heartworm Test

Does your vet do a yearly Heartworm test? Both our dogs have been on Heartguard Plus year round for the past five years. Our previous vet (who has passed away) never required a yearly test since they were on preventive medicine. Now our new vet requires a yearly test before he will issue a new prescription to 1800PETMEDS. I am just wondering if this is a protocol nationwide. We live on the SF peninsula.
