I was thinking of the child and that the woman could have done better with her limited finances.
Maybe they live somewhere without access to a proper kitchen?

You're right, I don't know. I made an assumption without sufficient evidence.

Food insecurity has always driven me crazy. For many years I've volunteered at my local food bank. I do it less now but write them checks monthly.
Whenever I'm on line at the supermarket & I notice someone taking items off the counter because they are short, I always tell the checkout girl/guy that l'll cover the difference. This happens about once every couple of months.
In a country as well off as ours there is no excuse for anyone to go hungry, period.

Even with more "sufficient evidence," why judge her at all?

At least the woman didn't shoplift what she needed/wanted. A paying customer, imagine that.

Wow! And that's not judgmental?
@KKJ Yup! Thought the same thing you did. How does she know the woman could have done better job with her limited finances?? The poor woman was trying to put food on the table! Ugh......

What stuns me is when people lecture you to "live below your means!"
What happens when you have 0 household incoming in? How to budget that?

I wish she could have gotten those 2 $2.98 dinners which I imagine would be so good when you are hungry. Then you eat them and your are not hungry anymore.
Hunger does hurt.

There's the SNAP program to help those in need. Plus free school meals for families with kids. During the summer they get SFSP (Summer Food Service Program).
