Why Is This? Hurricanes were originally from the Atlantic - that's how I learned things.
Typhoons were for the Pacific (same thing) and that was the name give to the storm. When did things change or does the media not know this?
Hi LR, I responded to your query on the other line. All of the news I've seen about Hawaii is using "hurricane."
I looked it up and found this: Hurricanes, cyclones, and typhoons are all the same weather phenomenon; we just use different names for these storms in different places.
My guess is that they're using "hurricane" because they assume most people know what that is but not a typhoon. Personally, I think it's simpler just to use one term for the same weather pattern.

We were in Kauai before and after the 1992 hurricane. It was so sad to see the damage and it took them a long time to recover and to get the tourists back.
Best wishes for the safety of all of the folks that live in the islands.

Mrs sweetiebear.
Please stay safe. You are where my heart is. The most gorgeous place on earth. Keep us posted as to how you are. I think you once mentioned the area you are in, so I was wonderifng if you are you protected or sheltered where your home is? We have friends on the big island and on Kawaii too. The friends on the big Island are sitting ducks, right out in the open.

Hope everyone stays safe and well. Scary times. Even paradise isn't perfect all the time. Many prayers and blessings and good thoughts. My cousin lived in Hawaii for a couple years, she was sent there for her Navy career (yeah, tough stuff) and she said it was so beautiful. Hopefully the storm will pass quickly without too much damage.
