Also, I like the idea of having your TV on in the background.

That's why I enjoy watching (often just listening to) QVC.  Keeps me company.

Just wait...depressing., worrying about the economy constantly, having someone around 24/7, feeling old, no energy...on and on.....

Re: Having a hard time adjusting to retirement

I retired at 56 and took a summer job at a State Park for 10 summers. Quit that this year. When I retired I wasn't really ready to stay home but needed todo something different. Now I'm ready to run around and do and see things with friends. Just got back from visiting 4 State Parks and a botanical garden. Had a wonderful time.

This is still new to you, so my advice is give it time. Maybe take a class and start a hobby. Volunteer work can be gratifying too.

I left my company when I sensed the benifit package wasn't going to get any better. Took my severance money and put new siding, windows and garage door on the house. Also did a refresh of our kitchen. At this point, it's our health that I hope we can retain for a long time.

@gellen I am writing from my own experience--and never felt obligated to "do" or "get a hobby" when I retired.  I am delighted to have enough time to spend taking care of my home and myself and doing that in a leisurely fashion.

I can fill my day cooking, cleaning, resting, reading, and enjoying the outdoors (sitting or strolling), seeing the birds and people in a way never could before.  I order groceries for delivery or you could go get them, do pickups, just living life without doing it around 8 to 10 hours a day of work!  I hope you love it more than you had ever imagined.

I like what you posted @Sooner , especially about not feeling obligated to "do" so many things in retirement. I say just do what you want and don't feel like you have to do certain things to please others. One thing I've found so annoying is when some people say  "so what do you do all day?"  Ugh!  So rude.

@KKJ You made me think about that and yes it is rude.  We need some suggestions for answers to those nosey folks!  Woman LOL  How about "Oh, I do anything I want to do! Whatever crosses my mind.  Isn't that luxury?"

Re: Having a hard time adjusting to retirement

[ Edited ]

I had difficulty with retirement.  At first, I found myself lonely and bored.  I think it depends on one’s temperament, but I like to be busy.  It took me a while to figure out how I wanted to spend my time.

I enjoy walking and nature, so I started there - spending a lot of time walking outdoors in different nature parks.  From there, I bought a camera and began photographing what I saw each day.  I found that I love photography.  I have a friend who never did art, but took an art class after retirement and found that she loves it.   We'll each have a different journey.

Things will get better.  It takes time to figure it out, try different things.   Good luck to you.
