Re: Have you received this call?

@country gal

I understand that some calls can be disconcerting.

About a month ago I received a call from a person who said he was returning my call about my passport!  I told him I had made NO calls concerning my passport, but also in my mind was the fact that I was leaving the country in less than a week for over 3 weeks.  He had my name, phone #, and SS # all correct.

Being very suspicious and concerned I asked for a phone # where I could call him back as the # was blocked on my phone.  He gave me a # and I called back.  It WAS the correct place, and someone had either made a bogus call about my passport, or a phone # had been recorded incorrectly.

He, my DH, and I all got on the phone, no one could find anything shady, but it was strange.  I was able to travel with NO problem in Eastern Europe for over 3 weeks.

Nevertheless, it is time for me to renew, and I've already sent in my passport for a new one.

It just sort of sticks in your mind, doesn't it?

Re: Have you received this call?

WOW @SharkE, that's the funniest post I've read all day!

So your "idiot" (your word) husband remembered to take the phone with him but has it turned off. Well, he surely is NOT the first person to do that.

btw~I think the number for "information" is still 411. They can look up any landline number for you. No specual account needed.

I'm sorry you ran into people who didn't know how to use their phone. I assure you even a lousy smartphone is capable of doing what you needed. It's the owners who were stumped.

Any business you were looking for in the yellow pages will also have a website. They could have Googled it for you if 411 somehow didn't have the number for some reason.

This is off topic so I'll end here  but LOL!

I just signed up on the Nat'l. Do Not Call list..was only on my state list before. I will be checking into the Caller I.D., Call Blocker and NoMoreRobo that were suggested. This problem had just gotten so bad in the last year and I didn't know what to do to correct it. Thanks for ALL your info. I just needed to know what to do and get a little nudging from you all. I will now take action! Thanks so much.

please get your self a simple answering machine, that way you won't need to pick up the phone to these idiots

They all hang up as soon as the machine picks up, and yes when you do answer you will get more calls

@BTW @country gal, don't let anyone shame you about not having the latest in technology.  I've been using my original flip cell phone for 15 years and just replaced it with a neat little flip phone from Amazon for $28.  And the only reason I replaced my first flip phone with this one is because I wanted the additional features of camera and video. I have no use for a Smartphone --  I can still make and receive calls, and text just like everyone else. :-)

@country gal, I certainly wasn't trying to "shame you", or your technology. @SaRina, I use three phones, one is a "feature" or flip phone.

The OP's inability to identify a caller or block an unwanted call is last century's annoyance, now all grown up into this century's vulnerability. It would be wise for COUNTRYGAL to become familiar with what current phone tech is capable of, even if she choses not to use it herself.

I don't think anyone was trying to embarass or "shame" the OP, we are talking about caller ID and answering machines not Iphones.  I think she was looking for advice

Glad I gave you a laugh. Probably cost money to call 411 or have to have an account or they would had helped me.

I know a young guy who pays 200 a month for his phone!!

Now, that's a laugh. !

Re: Have you received this call?

@SharkE,   no . . unfortunately it's not uncommon to see people who aren't very familiar with the phone they carry around with them. Once you know how to get the most out of a Smartphone you have the world at your fingertips.

I assumed you asked them to look in the yellow pages in their phone, because it never would have crossed my mind to do that. I would've gone straight to Google.

Pretty sure 411 is still a free service until you start to abuse it, multiple calls daily, then there's a nominal charge.

Reading your story I pictured my mom's relatives. I guess it seemed like their typical funny vacation story.

My favorite smartphone is used daily, costs me about $100 bucks a YEAR after the initial (QVC ) purchase price.

Your dollar foolish friend either was a sucker for a sales pitch, or he wanted an expensive phone his friends would oooh &ahhhh over.

Re: Have you received this call?

@country gal

Legitimate companies will send u a letter in the mail --- not call u on the phone - and definitely not a ROBOCALL. I get around 5 scam calls a day. IGNORE!!!

Re: Have you received this call?

@country gal, I assume this means you don't have a phone with you when you leave the house. (? )

Ah, yes . .another reason to take a fresh look at what you need and what's available.

If it were a legitimate concern, you would get an person calling you, not a robo call.  Maybe I'm wrong, but I wouldn't respond to a robo call like that.

I agree with you.

I think that if someone were legitimately trying to get a hold of you, @country gal, they would actually try and call you with a live call/live person trying to call you, or they would send a letter to you, or maybe even try and do both.

I really don't think that someone would use a robocall to try and reach you for something important.
