Scary isn't it?

No, never, I'm a very attentive driver.
For those who have experienced this, weren't you worried when you realized that, maybe thinking something was wrong?

It's not that uncommon. Google highway hypnosis.

I just did and read that it's dangerous, but there are things that can be done to help prevent it.
Here are some good suggestions:

Not me. Recently, my DH was on his way to the library in the next town. He made a turn which leads to his doctor's office. When I asked why he said he "forgot" where he was going!!! Fortunately, this doesn't happen often.

For me, it was not so much a forgetting, more of a zoning out.
And it happened when i was on overload with life. Busy busy busy...lots on my mind.
Now, I don't drive that much daily (around town, not long distance) and instead I dream and remember what I dream when I sleep. ALL the time. Drives me crazy how much (I know) I dream.

I've driven so much in my life... there was a time when I was driving from SF to LA and back quite often, driving from SF to Portland and back, driving to Salt Lake City and back, not to mention commuting for miles and miles and back home again.
Somewhere along the line, I made it a rule to get out of the car often, at least every two hours, walk around, visit the restroom and have a soda or coffee before starting up again. I worried I wouldn't be as sharp if I just drove through without stopping. Maybe that would help, I don't know.
