Years ago, I was in line behind an senior citizen in a grocery store who didn't have enough money for the few groceries on the conveyor belt. The cashier took the money the woman offered and I could see there wasn't enough. The senior citizen asked, is that enough and the cashier looked up and I leaned in and shook my head yes. The cashier smiled, told the woman yes and I made up the difference without the lady knowing.

I tried this a few weeks ago at Wegmans. It was a young mother buying diapers and other baby stuff with an infant in the cart. She didn't have enough and was trying to figure out what she didn't need...she was close to tears, digging thru her purse for change.

I motioned to the cashier that I would pay the difference - it was about $8. Instead the cashier waved her through and told her it was OK.

I asked the cashier why she wouldn't take my payment and she said that Wegmans allows cashiers to let people to short pay if it was an obvious emergency. She had a manager come over, explained it to him and he placed a piece of paper in her drawer.

Great store!

That is a wonderful story, terrier3. I've never had the opportunity to shop at Wegmans but it sounds like a great store.

We don't have Wegmans here either but God Bless them for understanding that sometimes people are barely making it.

Sometimes I need the reminder.

It is nice to do something for someone else because it makes me feel good.

I used to sell TV advertising to the family. It's a family run business - no public stockholders, so they can run the stores as they see fit.

When Mr. Robert Wegman - the founder - died, his funeral was broadcast in full on cable TV (I worked there back then) and was available on the on demand channel too. There were too many people who wanted to attend the funeral Mass - the TV broadcast was a public service to the community.

His son Danny and now his granddaughters are fantastic, innovative business people. They always put customers first and empower their employees to do the same.

Danny visits every store at least once every year. I saw him the last time he was in my store - he was mobbed like a rock star by employees and customers!

There are many needy people out there. And, there are many hungry folks too. Have a friend that volunteers at a good kitchen 2 times a week. This place is in the little town I live in in St. Louis County. You don't have to go far to find folks.......that are in need. I have gotten to the point where I only contribute to local organizations......not those that go out of our own country......we need to take care of our own first......

So true. When it comes to animal rescue agencies and charitable organizations, I think globally and act locally. I support food drives and local soup kitchens. You never know, life is not certain and your luck can change on a dime.
