Because i am a senior citizen and it would freak me out if the waitress said that someone had paid my bill. It would really make me wonder why - especially if they remained anonymous. I would tell the waitress I'll pay my own check , thank you, and please tell whoever said they would pay my bill for me that they should take that money and give it to an appropriate charity.

or you can be gracious in heart & spirit, thank the waitress (as the person who paid for your bill is probably gone by now) and take the money you would have spent on your bill and donate it to an appropriate charity of choice

that is what it means to "pay it forward".

That is what some can't seem to understand. Simply carry forward a nice gesture that you receive on to someone else. It doesn't have to be monetary. It could be as simple as helping someone reach something on a high shelf in a grocery store. Or returning their cart after you've helped them put their groceries in their car. Nice spreads nice.

For some reason I don't think it is a situation you'll ever have to concern yourself about.

Re: Have You Ever...Paid For The Order Behind You In Line

And now everyone is running to post all the other good things they do!!! Don't understand that either. I'm not putting anyone down for doing what they think is an act of kindness but I honestly do not understand the concept of just paying for someone's food who is behind you and then others do the same. It's more like a game!! To me it just sounds like craziness and also seems like it would cause the line to slow down a bit which wouldn't make those in line too happy.

Pook, I agree on the Starbucks thing. It did turn something good into a game and now they want to break records. That is not what Pay It Forward was meant to do. It was meant to inspire people to be nice to each other. Even if it's just a thank you or a simple helping gesture.

I totally agree with the random acts of kindness, but this sounds like a publicity stunt and who, in the end, really benefited from this "random act"? I guess contrived situations for the benefit of the business to get their name in the newspapers kind of negates the whole idea of spontaneous and anonymous generosity for me. I wonder how many people jacked up their orders knowing that the person in front of them was going to pay for it.

I thought the same thing. What's the point of it? Wouldn't be easier and faster for everyone to pay for their own order?

oh well. If you don't understand or like the concept, then you won't get it.

No, we understand and "get it." Just don't like the silly commercialization of it.

I would rather have this type of "silly commercialization" that some of the horrors that are currently going around in this world.

See? In a way, you're doing the same way. Paying It Forward to an appropriate charity. It's all good!!

Your right - i don't get why my paying for a meal or a toll or anything else for some stranger who may well be a multimillionaire is of any worth in the world when there are so many people who can't provide a meal a day for their children and could really use that money.

I get the being nice to people instead of ignoring others or being grouchy or rude like a lot are now and hopefully one person just being nice with please and thank you or a nice comment might inspire someone to be nicer to others - but then again it's something we all should be doing on a regular basis. When someone standing in line (or anywhere) is nice and friendly and polite to me or anyone else it just makes me smile and it cost nothing!! Though it usually is that nearly everyone has phone in hand and they will trample you down or push in front of you and not think twice about it!!!
