I think that's a very nice thing to do and I can't understand all of these naysayers attitude about it.

To answer the OP's question, yes.

Because by announcing it or bringing it to everyone's attention kind of defeats the purpose and as I already said exchanging niceties really means nothing. Go out and do something for someone who really needs it or doesn't have the means to pay it forward.

So, how do you feel when somebody holds the door for you ?

Entirely different scenario. That's called good manners and if a person has them , which I do, I would say "thank you" but I certainly wouldn't run and brag on a message forum about things I should do anyway. Putting my money and my energies to work is another matter altogether.

I wouldn't call posting an act of kindness on an anonymous board as "bragging".

I would call putting someone down for performing an act of kindness - mean spirited!

Peachysue: Lots of us 'get it'. But, of course, some people...don't. If I saw an older couple, it would make me smile...thinking how I hope to be that spunky @ their age to be dining @ a restaurant. It's not about the affordability of their meal.....it's about sharing my happiness they gave me @ that moment...they touched my heart.

Because i am a senior citizen and it would freak me out if the waitress said that someone had paid my bill. It would really make me wonder why - especially if they remained anonymous. I would tell the waitress I'll pay my own check , thank you, and please tell whoever said they would pay my bill for me that they should take that money and give it to an appropriate charity.

or you can be gracious in heart & spirit, thank the waitress (as the person who paid for your bill is probably gone by now) and take the money you would have spent on your bill and donate it to an appropriate charity of choice

that is what it means to "pay it forward".

Many people who have received this gift turn around and pick up the tab (or a part of it) for the person behind THEM in line.

I've seen instances where over 100 people keep the gesture going at a drive thru.

For every one person insulted, there would be at least 999 who would be surprised and pleased!

I totally agree with the random acts of kindness, but this sounds like a publicity stunt and who, in the end, really benefited from this "random act"? I guess contrived situations for the benefit of the business to get their name in the newspapers kind of negates the whole idea of spontaneous and anonymous generosity for me. I wonder how many people jacked up their orders knowing that the person in front of them was going to pay for it.

I thought the same thing. What's the point of it? Wouldn't be easier and faster for everyone to pay for their own order?

oh well. If you don't understand or like the concept, then you won't get it.
