To answer the OP's question, yes.
Because by announcing it or bringing it to everyone's attention kind of defeats the purpose and as I already said exchanging niceties really means nothing. Go out and do something for someone who really needs it or doesn't have the means to pay it forward.
So, how do you feel when somebody holds the door for you ?

Oh goodness gracious, don't mention offering to help someone at the grocery store empty their buggy onto the conveyor belt- I got ripped a huge one for telling I offer or help people..
I must be one bad, bad person..

Being kind and offering to help someone, well you don't know their circumstances and that might have made their day! Young lady checking us out at Walmart this morning, told me I was the only one that was uplifting and friendly to her...

The next time we are at a Cracker Barrel and I see a senior couple, I am going to have the server bring me their ticket...

No. Why would I pay for someone who is shopping in my fairly affluent neighborhood?! I would and do donate to food pantries and other charities that help the needy. Paying for the person next to you in line is simply a way to make yourself feel good and get to see the recipient of your largesse. If I was shopping in a poor area and saw someone struggling to cover the cost of their food order then I would consider paying for them.

I gave an 80 something year old lady, sitting on the side of the road with her dog, $20.00.. I don't know her circumstances but there she sat... also gave 20 to a young man, with one leg standing at the end of a ramp on the interstate- who knows what their circumstances are?
Was I right or wrong? I don't know- if we were ripped off, we were ripped off.. I give from my heart- that's just how I am!

I have had doctors that I work with pay for a coffee and/or muffin for me at the hospital coffee cart.I have never felt inspired to pay for coffee or a toll for any perfect strangers and I would think that would freak them out wondering why anyone would do that. Besides , how can you pay for the person behind you when you don't know what they are going to order?

It's not done as a "charity" gift.
It's just a nice, easy gesture. The people are BEHIND you...I don't even usually know what they look like!!! Nor do I care to know. It's just to put a smile on someone's face - kind of like finding a dollar bill on the sidewalk.
This has nothing to do with rich or poor!!!!
