Has anyone successful gotten rid of squirrels in their yard?

We have two small dogs, and a couple of squirrels that I'm really afraid might attack one of the dogs. The squirrels come out when the dogs are out to go potty, and a few times, thy are really watching the dogs, and seem to be getting closer to them. Has anyone been able to get rid of them in your back yard, and if so, what did you do/use? I was pretty frightened today when one came out of the beds and kept watching and sneaking closer to our little girl pup. :-0
