That must be a diocese decision, we were married ages ago by a Catholic priest in a non-denominational church on our college campus. I believe the church has changed on that old position.

There is a difference between being married by a Priest in a non-denominational church and being married by a minister in a Christian Church. The former would be recognized by the Catholic Church but latter would.

A Catholic relative wanted to get married on the beach. The parish priest would not perform the ceremony. Instead they were married by a person who quit the priesthood and started a non denominational Christian congregation.

I was responding to Luv2Decorate saying that for a wedding to be recognized by the Catholic church, it must be in the Catholic Church. That is no longer true.

Marriage is one of the 7 sacraments. If the marriage cannot be in a church because it's a small church with a big wedding, approval has to be received from the Bishop of the Diocese. I've had many conversations with our Priests about this. They will not marry a couple outside the church.

That is not true of every Diocese across the nation. Yes, it is often the decision of the Bishop. Some are more lenient than others.

Catholics are still Christians. What is the "right way"?

I recognize you're just "funning" me---making the vows a sacrament

Re: Has anyone renewed their vows ?

We are coming up on our 40th Anniversary. No "vow renewal" in our future, and we've talked about it. The main question for us was, WHY????? So we aren't.

BUT

For Sylvia, I'm happy that you and Mr. Sylvia did that for yourselves, in the Church, and that you are happy about it! Smile

What vows? We had a $25 wedding with the justice of the peace in CarsonCity Nevada in 1981.
