Re: Has anyone been to Cuba ?

From 1964 to 1966 I worked for Hilton International in the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, NYC. My 3 bosses were Cuban. They were CPA/financial types. They escaped from Cuba around 1960. Best job I ever had!!!!!

Your post reminded me of one of my Spanish teachers, in elementary school.  He also escaped at that time.  I always remembered him saying that he had $5 in his pocket.  Smiley Happy    He was my favorite Spanish teacher.

Re: Has anyone been to Cuba ?

It was usually requested by the pilot to not take pictures whenever we flew over or even near Cuban going to the West Indies.

I'm sure people still did.  I would just look down and wonder.

No desire to go there, though.  Years ago, I probably would've entertained the idea, not any more.  Funny how you change.

I'll go when I can, for certain.  Cuban-trained doctors are legendary in SE Florida.  I had one elderly doctor, an allergist, who was amazing.

I read on HuffPo this AM that Starwood hotels (Westin and the like) are down there now negotiating the set up of a new resort style hotel.  If it all comes to pass this will create more jobs in construction and service industries.  Key West is preparing for a daily boat shuttle, or was a few years ago, last time I was down there.

It's a wonderful culture and Havana is one of the oldest cities in the New World. Columbus was buried there until 1898, when his remains were taken to Madrid.

@Shelbelle- I went with Tauck tours and a few other companies probably do the same.

Re: Has anyone been to Cuba ?

The New York Times ran a wonderful photo essay today about Cuba - mostly large photos, short essay.  It doesn't sugar-coat anything, yet shows the beauty of the people and their country.  It's more than a little poignant.  I wish the good Cuban people had a better life with less government control.

Is the landscape similar to Puerto Rico?

@traveler- similar as they are both tropical islands but the beaches are much nicer in Cuba but not developed.  PR generally is modern, busy, industrial but Cuba is totally different.  The infrastructure is not developed, amenities are ok but not like PR.  There is poverty and no pockets of affluence that I saw.  You can't wander freely about in Cuba.  The people are sweet, shy and lovely and I enjoyed meeting them.  The landscape is similar but Cuba is a different experience.  I was glad I went but was happy to leave.

@Burnsite- I wish the best for the Cuban people but how much do you think will go to the people?  The government will profit but not the people until there is regime change.
