Has Anyone had Broken Bone "Hardware" Removed?

I broke my ankle about 8 years ago, had to have surgery and got a plate and 8 screws. Lateley I've been noticing a nagging pain in my ankle that comes and goes, and I'm wondering it it's from the hardware. I will be calling the doctor on Monday to make an appointment. Depending on what the x-ray will show, I'm wondering if removing the hardware is worth it.

Has anyone here ever had their hardware removed and what was you experience like?
