Re: Handicapped Parking

[ Edited ]

@jannabelle1.   I've learned to go to Walmart early, around 8am, not only to get a handicap parking place but to get an electric cart.  Most of the time though, I use the online shopping service and just pick up my order

I have a very good friend who has to use handicap parking. She should have a permanent plate, but refuses to.  She has a walker she keeps in the trunk of her car, which I get out for her when we get somewhere.  The problem though isn't other people, it's my friend.  She will park within the painted lines where you're supposed to leave room for vehicles in order for the wheelchair accessible vehicles to discharge their people.  I tell her all the time about it and she doesn't care.  Sometimes I can talk her into me dropping her off and parking if there arent' any handicapped spots available.   She gets very put out and upset if the spot isn't there for her.  Twice she has run me over with her scooter in the store and didn't a few times didn't realize I was having problems getting her walker out of the back of her SUV and closed the lift gate on my head.

I would suggest you tell your friend to find someone else to ride with until she becomes a nicer person.  I'm sure you care about her but you should not have to tolerate being treated that way, it just isn't right.

It never ceases to amaze me how laws can differ from state to state and even from county to county within that same state.

My youngest son has both legs in casts (knee down) from a sport injury a few weeks ago. He must put no weight on either leg and therefore is not only has these casts, he is also in a wheelchair. You would not believe the forms I had to fill out and have the doctor fill out in order for him to return to school; as I recall, there were 15.

To get him from the car into his chair, you must open the passenger door all the way out so the wheelchair can be placed in a specific position and he can use his arms to lift himself from car to chair. Reverse it to get him back into the car. Traditional parking spaces do not work for this, so, I went to the DVM to request a handicap hanging card for when I take him to school, the doctors or any function he is attending.

It was DENIED. Why? Because it's temporary and he'll get better. I kid you not, that was EXACTLY what the representative told me. I got on the phone and starting climbing the hierarchy of the DVM in my county/state and it was the same answer every time. It IS the policy to not give a temporary card to someone who does not have a chronic medical need.

And so, I seek out the spots at the end of rows and park accordingly. It stinks but there it is.

As for towing and fining, asap? Agree 100%. If you have the card or plate, use the spot. If you don't, park elsewhere.

I am so sorry you have to put up with the ridiculous decision of the DMV refusing you a temporary handicap placard while your son is obviously handicapped.  He is going to get better so in the meantime you and he can struggle getting him in and out of a car?  Ludicrous.  I would be furious.  I know you are doing the best you can, please be careful, hugs to you and your son.  Have a Very Healthy, Prosperous, Happy New Year.

I am going to tell on myself.  I used to drive my mother everywhere and her tag was in my car as she had no car.  One day I found my mother on her bedroom floor, she spent 10 days in the hospital and then straight to a nursing home with full blown dementia.  It was truly a mystery.

Anyway, I was running on no sleep and many tears.  The nursing home did not supply tissues for her and of course she had contracted some kind of cold from there and was on 2 weeks of IV medicine.  So I went to the drug store and the only spot open was a handicap spot.  I pulled in and whipped up the tag.  I can remember thinking jail would be ok if I could get some rest.

I was speed walking in to get those darn tissues,  Unfortunately the store had a empty endcap and no sign, my foot got caught on the end and down I went.  HARD!  My glasses and wallet ended up about 6 feet away.  I was bruised from one end to the other.  Nothing was broken but the top of my foot was so black and blue immediately.  After the store took my information, I hobbled out of there.

After I got in my car, I was laughing so hard about Karma.  I never even considered using that tag again.  EVER.

I won't even park in those spots resevered for pregnant mothers and mothers of sick kids, which I think both are ridiculous.

@I am still oxox, I absolutely agree with you.  It is so annoying to see people who are not disabled parked in the handicapped spaces.  I see it so much at the Y.  We have a marine who drives a smart car, has a handicapped placard, and parks in the handicapped spaces.  I guess I expect more from a marine, especially since DH has survived two forms of stage 4 cancer and is eligible for a placard put refuses as long as he can walk.  I know that I am being petty, but I expect the marine to suck it up and walk.  It is rare to see anyone working out with a physical therapist at the Y, so I believe the marine is able to walk a few more steps.

I also get annoyed at the ones who drive a relative's car with the placard and park in the spaces jus because of the placard but have no need.  Again, I see that much too often at the Y.

Don't judge others. You have no idea what their health problems may be. They have hanndicapped placards for a reason. A Marine obviously needs that handicapped placard. He may be working from from injuries suffered protecting us. Give him a break. Criticism only hurts yourself.

WOW, I live in a military city and I see people all the time that don;t "look" handicapped.  Not all handicaps are visual.  That is out of line to assume.

My (recently deceased)friend was the full time caregiver to her adult paraplegic son and therefore had a handicapped license plate.  She had her own mobility issues(would have qualified on her own issues but didn't bother) and was parked in the hospital parking lot without her son present.  She got a $450 ticket, which she paid without protest because technically she was wrong.

People parking in a handicapped spot without a permit should be towed.  It's one of those areas where there is no gray area.

When I was going through chemo, I had to get a temporary permit.  I got a few looks.  I couldn't go far without taking a rest and catching my breath.  My complaint wasn't finding available parking spots, but how far away the parking spots were to a building.  The hospital was the worst.  The experience gave me a whole new appreciation for handicap parking.

I have issues with how these spots are used.  I think there are people who need them and should have them and there are others who could do without them and save them for someone else in more need.  I was offered one when I fell and hurt my hip which heeled totally.  I used a cane and made my way to where I had to go.  I refused the sticker,  our state is an easy place to get one and therefore far too many people are requesting them out of convenience and being granted them.  Just the way I feel.

In my state, you do not go to DMV to make the request.  It comes from the doctor.  They have the forms, they fill out the necessary parts, and the patient or guardian fills out their part.  The doctor is the only one that can determine if a placard is necessary.  In my state, they have really tightened the criteria, and the doctor should know if the patient qualifies for a temporary placard.
