it's not considerate..........it's common sense as well as the law.........my dad was in a wheelchair, I remember having to go to places really really early, just so he could get enough room to get the chair and himself out of the car, let alone get to the place without breaking his arms rolling those wheels on the chair.........I remember not being able to get into certain places because there was no such thing as a wheelchair ramp, or doors wide enough for him to get the chair through..........I saw it all first hand and lived it right along side him..........our lives with him was restricted by where dad could go.........and that really s_ucked for him, he was trying to build a lifetime of memories for "his girls" before his death.

those spots are for people, like my dad, who NEED THEM..............................raven

For you it's common sense, for someone like me who is in a wheelchair it is considerate. Just today we couldn't get a spot close in, so my husband was so ticked (most of the cars in the handicapped spots had neither the license plate nor the placard) we had to park far away. And then wheel me and all our health related equipment along for the ride. It was a PIA. Those handicapped spots are a lifeline for the people who really need them.

Anyway, thanks for understanding and speaking with such conviction. I'll bet your dad was a very special man.

My mother had the card. I couldn't drop her off when the spaces were filled, she wasn't well enough to be left alone. But remember there are people who simply forget to hang theirs up. Someone here admitted to that. There needs to be MORE parking spots available.

My husband has been issued a handicapped placard because he has difficulty walking and uses a cane. It irks me to no end that he insists on parking in a reserved spot when he remains in the car and I go in the store. We've have had several heated discussions about this. I am going to go on line and research it further, because unless he sees in writing that what he is doing in not permitted he could care less what I have to say.

Both my little daughter and I qualify for handicapped parking. Neither of us is interested.

I had a friend who used her daughter's card whenever she could. She was far from handicapped, one of the healthiest people I've ever known. She used to pride herself on walking five miles a day.

She used to nag at me to get one.

It turned me off.

I think if you are truly handicapped, you should get a placard for your car. Why are you not interested in getting a placard for you or your daughter Ford?

Exactly my feeling. He could park elsewhere and when he spots me coming out of the store drive by and pick me up or I can just wheel the grocery cart to the car. Like I said it irks me and he gets all hot headed when I tell him he is should not do this. In fact it embarrasses me.

Honestly, he is not the only one that does this in our area. I've seen able bodied people driving the handicapped person in the vehicle use the space and enter the store and leave the handicapped person in the car. My ex-MIL did this and even used her husband's placard when he didn't accompany her. No wonder I didn't like her. I am a very rule oriented and do the right thing type of person.

Allegheny- I do believe a ticket could be issued if he parks in a handicapped spot and doesn't leave the car himself. The placard is issued in his name, not yours.

Several years ago I took mom to her hairdresser appointment. There were only two handicapped spots near salon doors. One was occupied by someone with a handicapped license plate and the other by someone with a placard. That car's engine was running, I could see an elderly woman sitting in the back seat. The door to the gas company payment center opened and a young man ran out and hopped into the driver's seat and left. Now he may have been paying grandma's gas bill but I was told later that he could have been issued a ticket if code enforcement officers had been patrolling the area.

Now that information may have been wrong but it makes sense. If the handicapped person isn't leaving the vehicle and someone else is, then that's an invalid use of the placard. The entire purpose of the placard/license plate is to make it easier for the disabled person to enter a store not the occupants of the vehicle.

He may well end up being cited. Then you can smile sweetly and do a mental "told you so".

I don't understand why you say that "what he is doing is not permitted". He has the placard - so what if he chooses to sit in the car. That's his choice. Does he hang the card up while he's in the car? If not, then he should - otherwise I see nothing wrong in what he's doing.

i wonder why a restaurant only has ONE handicap space?

here you need a handicap license plate OR a blue hangtag with month and year expiration date hanging from your rear view mirror.
