Re: Halloween decorations getting too gruesome......

You're my kind of person hennypenny.   My mother loved Halloween.   She'd sew my costume, decorate the house and yard and make the treats for the kids. She loved seeing the kids in their costumes - she loved to be happy.  There's always been scarey associated with Halloween although there are instances where it may go beyond what we had in the past.  My home was a happy home because my mother (and fathe) were open minded people.  I sure do miss them.

Did our grandparents say the same thing about us?  I remember an old neighbor woman saying Elvis was wicked and so was rock and roll;  the whole generation was lost.  There's a lot of good yet - we have to be willing to see it.

Re: Halloween decorations getting too gruesome......

Several years into her teaching career, my daughter asked if she could have our collection of holiday decorations for her classroom.  She much preferred her students be surrounded by the cute decorations she enjoyed through her childhood, compared to what was available in the stores now.  Those simple decorations are still being used today, and I totally agree the Halloween ones are much nicer than what is being sold now.

Re: Halloween decorations getting too gruesome......

I love Halloween but I agree that some decorations are over the top. For instance, there was a house several streets away from mine that had a horrific display of guillotines (sp?) with severed heads everywhere and people in the guillotines with screaming looks on their faces.  They had spread fake blood all around and on skeletons.  It was really awful.  I mean not fun at all, just sick.

Re: Halloween decorations getting too gruesome......

I used to dress up every year to hand out candy. This will be our first year without our beloved fur baby and I'm not looking forward to it. Tess loved seeing all the kids & she loved all the attention she got (she didn't love wearing a costume, so I usually just tied a bandana around her collar). Last year, I was also working part-time at the local library & dressed up as the tattoed librarian (I drew library-based quotes all over my arms, neck & face). Need to do something to be in a more positive mind-set, so I need to come up with something cool to wear this year.

I always liked pumpkins, cute ghosts, black cats with their backs arched, the occasional spider, scarecrows, stuff like that :-)

Re: Halloween decorations getting too gruesome......

I mostly put up fall decorations, but like to have a few Halloween items.  My grandson enjoys them.  I found some cute Halloween items, several years ago, at Cracker Barrel.  And, I have also purchased some cute Lenox pieces.

What makes this country great is diversity. Learning about other cultures and celebrating with others enriches all of us.

I very much agree, but many sadly do not. I have never been a 'my way or the highway' kind of person or one who fears diversity - and I am of the "old people" generation ;-)

Re: Halloween decorations getting too gruesome......

I hate Halloween and always have.  My DH does too, so it works out.  We usually turn off our light and go out to dinner on Halloween.  We are the Halloween version of Scrooge. LOL

We live out in the country with a long driveway so it has never really been a problem.  When our daughter was still home, she would sit up at the end of our drive and hand out the candy.

I remember years ago reading Erma Bombeck.  She hated Halloween also.  She said she would give each of her kids a brown paper bag, scissors to cut out eyes, mouth, and arm holes, and crayons to decorate the bag.  She put the bags over their heads and sent them off to school for their Halloween parties. She told them to tell the teacher that their mother was home, sick in bed.

I always came up with a costume for my DD, but it had to be cute!
