Re: HAPPY 100th BIRTHDAY, ROUTE 66!

Anyone here remember the way young men took such good care of their cars?

Refurbished cars looked like brand new.

I once put my fingerprint on one of those shiny 'perfect' cars, and the owner wasn't very happy.  He had to buff it to clean perfection.  lol

Well, looking back, it is refreshing to recall how young men took good care of their cars, and their respect for their hard work-earned purchases.  Not much, if any, credit cards in those days.

Thank you for this thread !

Right, @shoekitty ,  often because of Steinbeck and "The Grapes of Wrath",   Route 66 and the great trek out of the Dustbowl are forever twinned in many minds.  Haunting to see the images.

@ROMARY ,  you're welcome, I love all the lore.  Your story is fun -- taking fastidious care of one's car was definitely a "thing"!

Thnks for the reminder, Desertdi!  "Take It Easy" by The Eagles.... (1972) Started singing it in my head seeing these wonderful pictures! Thanks Oznell for the wonderful topic and pictures!

....well I'm  a-standin' on the corner in winslow, arizona
with such a fine sight to see
It's a girl, my lord, in a flatbed ford
Slowin' down to take a look at me
Come on baby, don't say maybe
I've  got to know if your sweet love is gonna save me
We may lose and we may win
But we will never be here again
Open up I'm climbin' in to take it easy........

A few more verses, of course! LOL!

@ROMARY

Not only "the men"...

I can have dust an inch thick  in the  house...but that car has to be PERFECT

It's a metallic black (no chrome), and I dust the whole body before I even get in.

@shoekitty

My family used to go Florida every year.    Then spend some time at the Smoky Mt Natl Park on the way back.  No freeways in those days, either.    US 41 all the way.

The long ride made me bored to tears...and, of course, as a kid, I had to take a lot of "pit stops"...which were also hard to find, so they stopped the car, and I hid behind a bush...    di
