Brings back memories of the Route 66 theme by Nelson Riddle, I still remember it, loved watching that series with Martin Milner and George Maharis.

Guess, QVC doesn't have the 2 sisters as vendors anymore that had some name like Junk Gyspy or something like that. They could have done a Rt 66 show highlighting varous vendors with clothes , housewares , food, ect

My dad was obsessed with Route 66 !
I was a very young child, and the three of us traveled that road, stopping 'here and there'.
We had one of those large atlas paperback books, and I remember following the route.
Thank you for those memories. ![]()

@just bee , how awful about Lindy's Diner. Looks like it was a great place! Hope they somehow rebuild.
Did not know about the stamps-- thanks for the alert!
@Pipsqueak , oh my goodness, that motel was a classic! I love the old motor courts, which feature a lot in Thirties' and Forties' movi Thank goodness some of it was salvaged. Love seeing that, thanks for posting it!
@Desertdi , good ol' Winslow, Arizona, thanks for posting! I'm sure my parents and I have been through there-- would love to go back. I love smaller town Arizona-- Prescott being one of my faves. But Prescott is small no more!
@skatting44 , you are absolutely right, that would have been a perfect fit for those vendors.

Do any of you remember the Giant Orange stands? They were shaped like an orange along Highway 66, highway 99, and sometimes the 101. Most served orange juice, Orange Crush, and some snacks starting about 1945. Some even had lemonade. I remember about 1952,( along the 66 ) leaving LA to go home in NorCal, they would be sparsely lined along the highways. what a beautiful sight, to a kid anyway! It was unique and exciting. That huge bright orange, against the sky.. plopped in a sea of nothingness. The juice or soda was 5 cents, and 10 cents for the big cup lol. There are still a couple left, one in Fontana ...

Hey, your description of them is poetic, @shoekitty ! Sad to say, I don't remember seeing them ( although, it's possible and I've forgotten), but I would have had the same reaction as yours.
They are so cool, you could almost turn one into a little doll house. But then, I always seem to want to turn everything into a doll house....

Route 66 also became the route of hope to those fleeing the dust bowl. and the farming crisis in plains. As Immortalized in The Grapes of of Wrath. Displaced, foreclosed upon, and seeking food, shelter and new life they led the migration during the Great Depression. They headed .out West, mainly California with promises of work, Those who did make it to SoCal often found promises of jobs not what they had hoped, Many later migrated to other parts of Ca, often the Shipyards of SF, and San Joaquin Bakkey.
National Park Services wrote following:
Route 66 became a crucial lifeline during the Dust Bowl era, as thousands of families fled the devastated Great Plains in search of better opportunities in the West. The highway, stretching from Chicago to Los Angeles, was the main route for migrants, particularly those from Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, and other affected states, heading to California in hopes of finding work and a new life .
