@abbalulu I am 69 years old and as long as I can remember Punxatawny(no idea how to spell it) has had a huge Groundhog day celebration. The movie came much later. The movie was made because of the well known event, not the other way around.

I love Groundhog Day but seriously I don’t ever remember when Phil didn’t see his shadow and we have an early spring! It never happens... 🙏

"The film was shot in Woodstock, Illinois, 60 miles (97 kilometres) northwest of Chicago near the Wisconsin border, because Punxsutawney "didn't have a town center that looked good on camera", according to Ramis..."

Yes, you are absolutely right. The event in the movie was based on Ground Hog day in Pennsylvania. I was just mentioning that ever since the movie was made in the town that they have had a celebration each year. It's a small town without many things happening so that is their claim to fame.

@Noel7 Yes, the town is Woodstock Illinois and it really is quite charming. There is a cobblestone square and that gazebo in the middle is really there all year round. The bell tower that Bll Murray would jump off of is in an old Opera House which is still used for performances.
In any case we are having six more weeks of winter. Living in northern Illinois one doesn't need a ground hog to tell them that.

I think you live near where my late MIL went to college.
You will have to put seeing the movie on your list of things to do this year. If you love Bill Murray you will like this movie.
I can't think of any colleges around here except over the border in Wisconsin-but I may have forgotten about something that's around here too.
