Re: Grocery prices, yet again

@In-x-s  I purchased those Durkee FF onions today as well! The funny thing is mine were $1.89.

Eggs at my store are .45 cents. 15 minutes away at another Aldi's, they are $1.89.  I have NO IDEA how Aldi does its pricing but obviously it's not a set price; not even at stores just a few miles away from each other. Knowing this, the only way (IMO) you can keep track of whether costs or rising or not is by keeping tabs on store you always frequent.

My thoughts on Aldi increasing prices is this: if Aldi's is this expensive (on whatever you're purchasing), then how much is the big name store charging for the same thing? ANd how are people affording it?

Another example: I purchase the Aldi's brand of Jalapeno potatoe chips for school lunches. One bag is $1.29. This is an exact copy (down to the graphics) of Lay's Jalapeno potato chips which cost $3.99 at Walmart and is $4.29 at my local Giant for the same weight. Big price difference and why I now shop at Aldi's; I have many mouths to feed and my dollar goes farther but...for how long. That case of soda may only be pennies for a can but for those who buy this as a treat and can't afford the gas station or Starbucks (what a joke), that increase means that one treat is now gone as well.

I budget down to the penny.  I was taught to make my money work for me as hard as I work for it. But in the end, you only have so much in the bucket that you can spend. As the cost of food rises (and it is) the choices become more and more difficult regarding what you're going to be able to purchase. For many, that's no big deal. For far more, it is a big deal.

@SahmIam  I just remembered the other thing that went up significantly was the Aldi "Velveeta" which has always been 3.99 was now 4.99.

It is a 2 hour round trip for me to do an Aldi shop -- this trip was not a money saver.  I can go to Wal-Mart locally and get comparable items/pricing without the time and gas to do the Aldi shopping.

Sept. 13, 2019

China will suspend tariff hikes on soybeans, pork and some other farm goods. The move follows the US Presidents decision Wednesday to postpone a planned Oct. 1 tariff hike on Chinese imports to Oct. 15.

Beijing's decision to restore access to low-cost U.S. soybeans also would help Chinese pig farmers who use soy as animal feed. They are reeling from an epidemic of African swine fever that has caused pork prices to soar.

Re: Grocery prices, yet again

Sometimes we have to do w/out.

Soda? is one example. When we shop if an item is too costly we just skip it and wait till another time.

Another thing we do: if it is a good buy we stock up. The other day at Walmart ice cream bars were a dollar for 6. (A dollar !) we bought several packages.

In the three stores I shop, avocadoes have gone from .99 on sale up to 2.99 regular price.  On the other side of the coin, beef, including decent steaks, and pork have been offered at great sale prices.

Funny, I just looked that up the other day.  One reason is the smallest crop from CA in years.   Law of supply and demand.  Prices expected to stay high for a while, too.

One of my "subscribe and save" auto deliveries through Amazon went up from $15.22 to $18.21.  This for 3 large plastic 34.5 oz containers of dry roasted peanuts.

Re: Grocery prices, yet again

I was at Aldi today and yes, even here the prices have increased.  I needed chili powder. Their store brand, Stonemill, was still 95 cents, but the size used to be 4 ounces, now it was 2.5 ounces.  It looked like several of their spices had lost some weight!  New bottles, with new labels.

I was also shocked at the price of chicken legs.  I don't recall what the price was, but I remember last year they were on sale for 49, sometimes 69 cents per pound.

Burhman's hot sauce (similar to Frank's) used to be 85 cents, now it is double, maybe triple the price.  Perhaps supply and demand?  I found it was less expensive to buy one Frank's two-pack at Sam's.

@GSPgirl Those prices are going to go way up after 10/31.

I guarantee you that London’s prices will always be more expensive that here.

@In-x-s

Wow, a grocery store would have to be giving away the food before I'd make a 2 hr. round trip!

Re: Grocery prices, yet again

@gidgetgh - I am in the Atlanta area as well, and prices have definitely been going up tremendously the last few years.  The other day, I bought something for $1.99 and I know it used to be 99 cents not long ago.

Thanks for the information about the tariffs and price increases.  I will definitely do a big shopping trip before October 15th!
