This is where Trader Joes covers their bases and asks you to initial their receipt for the cash back. That way there's supposedly no ? afterwards as they hand you the cash and you initial.
House cat, did you search pockets and all inside purse and wallet?? I assume you have. I just know that I myself frequently stick the cash in any odd place then I cannot find it until I do an all out search. I hate when this happens. Hope its resolved to your satisfaction ![]()

A similar incident happened to me at a fast food place, when I thought I paid with a 20, but got cash back for a 10. The manager knows me, and I trust her to be honest. I politely asked that if the drawer came up long, to please keep me in mind. When I returned the next day, I was told that the drawer was not long. My lesson was to be extra aware at the register. I did ask her - again, politely - to encourage the cashiers to put the bill on the top of the drawer when pulling out the change, so that if the customer is wrong, or confused, or lying about what bill was given, the proof is right there. If I lost $10, I learned a lesson. If it was my goof, then I'm glad I didn't go off on some innocent cashier. Good luck! You can buy a lot of two-buck Chucks with that 40 bucks!

Every cashier's drawer is audited for variances and are recorded, whether they are over or under the original amount. In addition, every transaction is recorded into the company's daily records and all cashiers and employees are videotaped throughout their shift. I would most definitely contact the store. If this employee is an honest person, there will be no problem.

Not too long ago, I had bought something and my change was $5 plus change. The cashier told me he was out of dimes (or whatever it was) and he had to get change. After getting change from the guy working on the next register, he handed me my coins, but didn't give me a $5 bill. I kept my hand out and told him he didn't give me $5. He kept a straight face and didn't say anything. He just gave me the $5.
I thought his "non-reaction" was strange. I wouldn't doubt it if he had tried to distract me by making me wait for change (coins) and then hoping I wouldn't notice that I didn't get the $5.

A few days ago, I took my daughter out for a quick lunch before we headed to the mall. I didn't order anything for myself as I wasn't hungry. Anyway, the cashier rang up the order and told me it cost $5. I said, "$5? Exactly $5?" She then said, "Well, $4.85."
It made me wonder if she did that on purpose. It all adds up if she did that throughout the day. If someone actually looked at the receipt and mentioned it, she could just say it was a mistake and give the change to the customer.

Keep in mind there are black "ball" cameras over each register filming the transactions ..... years ago I had a problem with not getting the right change. I called the store manager and he took the info I read off the receipt, played back the tape of my transaction and could see I didn't get my money!
Of course, it's also possible that a cashier could mentally keep track of money not given out and pocket just before the end of the shift, but cameras would catch that, as well. The cashiers whole shift is recorded.

I don't spend cash often, and I didn't spend any cash since then. Today I found the receipt in my wallet with the $40 cash back accounted for, but the cash isn't there.
Could I have lost it? I suppose, but it's not likely. I think more probably the checker was telling me about the rewards points and survey at the bottom of the reciept and forgot to give me my cash. There is nowhere else I would have put the cash other than into my wallet with the receipt.
So, to make a short story long - is there any way for the store to tell at this point if there was a mistake with my transaction last week?
When I was a cashier many years ago, we had to reconcile our drawers every night. Is this still the case?
I'm ready to chalk this one up to stupidity on my part for not paying attention, but I'm wondering if I have any other recourse.
Thank you.
@house_cat You need to go back to the store and talk to the manager.
That person's drawer would of been over and they do keep track.
Take receipt and ask if that drawer might have been over.

When they have to cash out their drawer at the end of the day, they should have $40 extra. I hope you called them. (I didn't read all the posts). This is why I'm so leary of engaging in conversation at checkout. Their mind is on the chit chat sometimes, and not on the job. I'm sure you'll be on your toes here on out. It has probably happened to others, but do call them!!

A few years ago a new restaurant opened not far from where I live and a lot of neighbors and I used it and liked it. However, the servers suddenly started giving back just the notes in your change, and not the small change (for example, for a $7.50 amount out of a $10 bank note, they would give you just $2.00 and not mention the extra 50 cents). It started with one server, then suddenly most of them were doing it. After it happened to me two or three times (and each time I did ask the server for my change), I talked to the manager and, strangely, he said I was the only person who had complained. Anyway, after that it all stopped.
