Re: Got a Washing Machine finally

While box stores may offer better deals, we've always bought from a local shop.  For us the most important thing is, they send their own repairman within 24 hours.  I've heard too many horror stories about waiting for weeks for a repairman sent from headquarters when purchases were made from Lowes or Home Depot.

In our area it doesn't matter if you purchase at the big box or local family owned.  It is the same service man who comes out.  (Actually, he has retired, now his son.)

Re: Got a Washing Machine finally

I don't bother with warranties on items like this.  I know too many people who went round and round trying to get anything covered under the thing.  It always seemed as if whatever their problem was, it was excluded from coverage.   About a year ago the belt broke on my Samsung dryer.  My DH looked up how to replace it on YouTube, bought the belt (under $10.00) and repaired it himself.  It broke on a Sunday night and when I came home from work on Monday, it was repaired.

I would be shocked if your new washer lasts 20 years.  They don't make things to last that long anymore.

Re: Got a Washing Machine finally

I had been a Kenmore customer and depended on advice of my Sears salesman.  I strayed from Whirlpool to LG. Three years and it needed replacing under prorated warranty.  I did not want to invest any more $ so went with the GE top loaded that had variable water levels.  I have been relatively pleased considering options today.  Not up to par with old Kenmore but those days are over (sadly).  I can tell insulation not as good, it does shake on some loads, and its starting to have an occasional drip after some loads.  I think variable water level is key.

GEWasher is installed and I'm doing my wash!  1st 2 loads were just fine.  A little confusing because it's a bit complicated.  All those dials!  All those options for what your load is for.  One feature I like is the water sensor.  I keep it on that instead of guessing if it should be medium or high, etc.  I also decided to keep it on warm water.  One load takes a bit more then it did with my old machine.  But so far (doing the last load)  everything seems to be very clean!  Wow washers sure have changed in the 20 years!

We had an appliance repairman tell us not to bother with the extended warranties.  He said they never cover what usually goes wrong.

True as that may be, it may also keep him from getting more jobs.

Re: Got a Washing Machine finally

Be glad you didn't get a Samsung. I don't think it's a reliable brand. I had to get a Samsung fridge last year when my old GE Monogram died. They had almost nothing else available due to shipping backups due to COVID. The Samsung is pure junk and I hate it but I am still using it since there were still very few options while the warranty was in effect. DD also has a Samsung washer and it is 18 months old....has had it repaired twice already.
If you get the extended warranty, make sure you read the fine print so you know what it actually covers.
I don't think they will ever make them they way they used to. I remember my mom's old Kenmore washer. I think that think lasted almost thirty years!

I have bought several big appliances over the years from Lowe's since they do the 12 months no interest thing. Even when it isn't posted, I would tell them I wanted it and they said okay.

Re: Got a Washing Machine finally

Because of my anxiety anticipation syndrome, I was a nervous wreck waiting for the delivery men. But once they were here, I was fine. My husband just told me to stay away from everything.  So I sat on the front steps of my porch while they delivered the new washer and took away the old one. My husband dealt with them.
