Sad, sad, sad.
I remember getting my first sewing maching there when I was ten. It was a wonderful memory this morning.
Hope all is well and you are seeing family for the holidays!![]()

@gardenman - Kmart bought Sears for $11 billion dollars, not the other way around. They used the name "Sears Holdings" for the new company to take advantage of the Sears name.
So many people think it was Sears who bought Kmart, but it just isn't true. Sears has been in trouble for a very long time.
The Sears stores where I am (that are left) are very old and out-dated. I've bought clothing in them a few times in recent years, but that's it. I was just in Kmart on Friday. I still like their stores and would be sorry to see them close.

It's not the economy. Sales for the holidays are brisk in general. Sears hasn't kept up with the way people shop now. They've fallen behind and are reaping the results imho.

It's the result of a poor economy PLUS a number of other factors, especially shopping habits...i.e. internet.

My son works in the corporate offices of Sears. They are far from closing.

I agree that it is NOT the economy, but business missteps made by Sears over the past 25+ years. I may have fond memories of their catalog, and own a Kenmore appliance or two, but I do not shop there anymore. Same reasons as those mentioned...old looking stores, very few employees, and low inventory. Stores can't stay in business if no one wants to shop there.

I WISH the Kmart here in Sarasota on Fruitville Rd would close. it is disgusting. They should be embarrassed that it is in their fleet of stores. It is around the corner from me. I drive 3 miles farther not to shop there.
If this is how their management and executives want to do business, they do not deserve my business. Good riddens.

Being a working mother making $100 a week ($50 of which went to my babysitter), the Sears catalog was my life source. My girls went to Catholic School, so I didn't have to buy much in the way of clothing (for four girls). But what I did buy came from the catalog, as did Christmas in its entirety. The girls would go through the catalog and put their initials next to their favorite toys. (D, E, L, M) There are some memories so precious, one never forgets.
In those days one had to go to the pickup area of the store, there was no delivery then. I remember it well, trying to get all of the boxes into my father's 1968 Ford Mustang! And then getting them into the house and under the bed before my girls saw me! Good thing I was young and strong then!
What I wouldn't give to have those wonderful days back.

If you read the entire article it seems that there are two visions of the future afloat. Your son's, and the "other". Hard to know what's really going on with the so-called sale of assets like real estate to keep it going, and the end to their apparel sales, with suppliers refusing to deliver for fear of bankruptcy.
I can definitely see the reinvention of the company but I have no idea if they have anyone who is capable of doing so.

I'm sorry our Kmart closed. I used to enjoy going in there. Cute summer clothes for me and my kids. I even bought two very large 10k gold bangle bracelets there years ago. They are really wide and pretty. I think I paid around $50 for each of them. I still have them and they're still beutiful.
