As to a response to the OP, not necessarily. A parent can do all the right things and still have a stubborn, rebellious child who will not behave no matter what they do.
I agree. I also believed in spanking but only for out-right defiance or when they are doing something that could be very dangerous like running out in streets, etc.... or.... when nothing else would work. I don't believe in spanking a child when you are very angry. It has to be when you are in control of yourself. Time out just doesn't work for some children. My children have never once accused me of being a "cruel" mother. I agree with those who say taking a tired bored child out in public when they are very little is asking for trouble. A little common sense with children goes a long way. I get so tired of hearing that everyone who spanks their kids is an abuser. That is just so not true.

I certainly agree Jubilant. I am in the older age group but every one I know still believes that a mild spanking never hurt their child. A generation of non violent adults who generally have had respect for the law seems to have proved that.
In the south and even in my Dad's boyhood days in D.C. they used a belt to discipline which I hate. My own uncle used this method on his own boys but for some reason they don't seem to resent it and apparently turned out fine. I certainly hope my cousin who now has grandchildren didn't follow in his father's steps using this method and that this practice is not common anywhere in this country today.
