I am a 4th grade teacher and today was our first full day of school for students, yesterday was a 1/2 day. After yesterday a student's mother called me and requested a conference to which I agreed to today after school. Usually when a parent calls this soon in the year for a conference they are wanting to get a jump start on the year or make me aware of some sort of problem - as a mom I understand wanting to get kids off to a good start!
THIS mother, however, wanted to know if it would be okay for her child to call me by my first name instead of Mrs. "Smith". She wanted me to know that HER child is being raised to feel inferior to no one and that everyone is equal and no one person is better than another. She believes it sends a mixed message when a child has to refer to an adult as Mr., Mrs., etc. and that children shouldn't feel less than adults. I was shocked....I'm still shocked!
I politely told her that I respected her choice as a mother, but that I would have to ask that I be referred to as Mrs. "Smith" . She left abruptly and said she could tell what kind of year her child was going to have!
AHHHH, a new school year has begun
