Gofund has helped many in need but nowadays, even the most believable story may not be true.  I have found when I "give" or help people, I just give and my concious is clear if they are scamming it is on them.

I don't give to go funds, I only give to the salvation army as I know they help people.

As long as giving is voluntary and not mandatory, I don't mind them.

I wouldn't give to a Go Fund Me account unless I knew the people personally and knew that the request genuine.  I have many charities that I donate to and I try to help organizations and people when I can, when there's a real need.

I often wonder how closely these fundraising accounts are monitored by the Internal Revenue Service, and if the appropriate taxes are paid by the recipients...

Good point @handygal2. Probably the IRS requires them to report the money so maybe it's an honor system like other things that have to be reported.

I'm shocked and appalled at GoFundMe and know first hand about it because my stepdaughter used it to raise some money so she and her husband could buy glasses.  She's always had her hand out to her dad, my husband, for everything.  She's seldom worked and she's 37 years old with 3 kids.  My husband said if it wasn't for her 3 kids, he would've kicked her to the curb a long time ago.  She lives rent free in a house that my husband's parents gave her.  Yes, she's been on Welfare in the past, too.  Her husband is just like her, won't go to work.  I guess this time she decided not to ask her dad for the money and tried GoFundMe.  I was so surprised that she raised like $600 and was able to get each of them a pair of glasses, and probably had some left over!
