Re: Giving away a Christmas tree

@Witchy Woman wrote:

I recently, I offered free a 10 ft Christmas tree (local online classifieds).  Someone called, wanted it, and I offered to deliver in my pickup truck, since it was 4 large boxes that would not fit in a car.

She was to email me her address and time for Friday delivery.  Never heard from her.  I figured, OK, maybe she changed her mind.

Late Friday, I got an email asking about Saturday.

I had other things going on today, and, again, offered to deliver on Sunday or Monday.  Or, she could stop by Saturday and pick it up.

No response.

While it's not a crisis or anything, I just find the behavior puzzling.  If you want something and it's free, and the person is going to deliver it, what's the problem?

Even if Sunday or Monday wouldn't work, at least respond.

Why is that so hard for some to do?

One step away from putting it in the trash Cat LOL

I will tell you why, because it's free it has no value to her, if she were paying for it would be a totally different thing--even 10-20 bucks

I dealt with the same stuff when I used to Freecycle,

they could come this day---- that day,

I wanted to write back in big letters, that if you really wanted the stuff you would come and get as soon as possible

Seriously...I would never, never, ever drive to a

stranger’s home to deliver something.

And in turn, I would never, never, ever allow a

total stranger to deliver something like this to me.

Too much personal information on both sides being exposed.

Meet in the Walmart/Target parking lot at high noon where

it would be safe for both parties.

If she’s smart, she probably got spooked when you asked

to comes to her address.

Toss it....and never offer or ask for home addresses.

Re: Giving away a Christmas tree

Put it out at the curb several days prior to trash pickup and then post on freecycle, nextdoor and Craigslist.  If no one picks it up, the trash men will.

Absolutely!  i would just put it out for the trash man.  unlikely anyone wants a tree that large that you have to assemble anyway.

in this area they tell us to meet at a very very public place in daylight to complete a sale or giveaway.  as an aside, craigslist can attract the creepy.

Ordinarily, I would agree with both of you.   And, I will talk to my local thrift store and give Salvation Army a call tomorrow.

However, this thing is a behemoth.  We have 10 ft. ceilings, so it wasn't an issue.  But, most homes will not be able to accommodate the thing.

Not to mention it is in 5 very large boxes.  It is unlikely someone is going to want it sight unseen without seeing it assembled.

Nevertheless, I will see if I cannot give it away before dumping it.

There are lots of crafters who repurpose artificial trees...I have a friend that uses sturdy tree branches, limbs & logs, pots them, drills holes & inserts the artifical tree branchs she cuts to size to make primitive trees in different sizes & others make wreaths, garlands, etc. Don't make an issue of the size...fingers crossed someone will be interested in using it as is or crafting new treasures.

Try donating it to Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity or Goodwill, the money they sell it for will do some good & the buyer will enjoy it like you have. Good Luck.

I second the idea to call the salvation army, I have a tree and ornaments last year!!!

Re: Giving away a Christmas tree

Don't blame her, blame yourself.  You were giving someone a Christmas tree, what possessed you to say you'd deliver it?  I never heard of such a thing.  If you are giving something a way, especially a tree that comes in 4 boxes, they come and get it.  Unless, of course, you are giving it to a church or school or something like that.

not sure you will find someone to take a 10fter that has to be assembled one branch at a time.

What possessed me?

Well, I guess I was trying to be nice, but I see everyone's point about being creeped out.  Didn't think of that.

She asked me if it would fit in a car, and I said, it would not.  She only had a small car, not a truck.  I have a pickup.

A 10 ft tree that has been been up and down several times is gigantic.

We could not get it back into the original box and put it in several.

Honestly, it didn't occur to me that I'd done anything creepy.

Thanks all.
