Have never used softner and now use Nellie's Laundry Soda and it leaves no residue on anything and I figure it cost me about $.12 a load. Used all the name brands and always has a build up of soap and/or other residue, especially on big towels. Not any more and the whites look just as cleans as the "big name" brands, be it powder or liquid.

Same here. I stopped using softners years ago and haven't noticed any difference.

Clothes are still soft and no static cling any time of year.

I really don't like the smell of fabric softener scents on people's clothing.

BUT, I would also consider that they cause a lot of damage too, so I'd really think about it before using dryer sheets. There is lots of information out there about this.

I stopped using dryer sheets when I saw how much lint was in the dryer hose. The sticky mess was caused by the "sticky" dryer sheets. The lint buildup can cause a fire.

Thanks for this tip. We use Mrs. Meyer's products but haven't tried this one yet. The bonus to using her products is that they are cruelty free.

As I stated earlier, try the dryer balls. I keep 4 in my dryer at all times. Takes care of static, does a little softening, and speeds up drying time. These last for years in dryer.

I just ran across an article "Are the dangers of dryer sheets causing you and your family serious health problems?" From Life Natural. com It's a company of some sort, but this article is similar to what I think about dryer sheets. And it's a 'safe' site. I checked. EDITED: p.s. Keep in mind that ingredients may have been substituted/changed throughout these years, hopefully for the better.

In my research and use, dryer sheets are bad for the dryer (can mess up those dryers that sense how dry items are to complete the cycle) and you can't control the level of product, unless you cut them in half I guess.

I like liquid, but use significantly less than half of what is called for, and dilute it with water in the dispenser.

I have known for years that I needed to take the dispenser apart and clean it out, and do so on a regular basis. If you want to see something really gross, dismantle your washer. My old one was broke, and my husband can fix most things, so he took it apart, took the drum out and all. There are so many places that get gunky (and that is just being kind) and so very gross. In the end, there was more wrong than right with the old machine, and we got a new one, but what we saw has made me thing twice about what I throw in the machine now. I take extra dirty or greasy work clothes to the laundromat now.

When I read all the paperwork that came with my old GE dryer it said that it'll void my warranty if I use dryer sheets in the dryer. That tells you something! That was 17 years ago and I still won't use them. I now have a new Samsung washer & dryer. I use liquid fabric softener mixed with water (as my manual suggests) and have never had any problems with build-up in this new machine.

I have allergies and detest the smell of any softener, if I have to use it I will use 1/2 of an unscented sheet in my dryer
