@joann1218. IMO the tricky part is spending money on a gift. She collected funds from others in your office to help you and your family. For this reason, spending money for a gift for her seems inappropriate. Bake something delicious for her and your co-workers who helped you out. If you don't bake, you can bring in a fruit platter or go to a big box store and purchase a tray of cookies.

American Express gift card for as much as you can afford. This gives her complete freedom to spend it as she sees fit.

I agree re massages and mani-pedis. I think it's assumed that most women love those, but a gift card given to me for those things would go unused. I do my own mani-pedis, and I find it relaxing. I'm not at all interested in a spa, massage, or anything along those lines.

So I would only give something like that if I was sure the recipient would like it. And if I wasn't sure, I would absolutely choose something else.

Every holiday season there are threads in which posters disparage homemade cookies, candy, and the like. They won't eat them and throw them in the trash. Gift cards often go unused or get sold for a fraction of their value on Ebay.

Since many contributed, purchasing a cookie tray for all to share seems the best choice. For the co worker who covered for you while you were away, give her a couple of your paid vacation days.

I always use my gc's. So does everyone I know! I personally don't like house plants and I'd give away one if it were given to me.

Many people throw out *homemade* food because it's impossible to know how clean the cook was, the utensils, what the ingredients were, etc. Those things are well meant but I had a neighbor who was a horrible baker and insisted on giving us plates of her cookies now and then. We thanked her and put them in the trash.

I think the cookie platter for the whole bunch who helped is the way to go.
